Replacing the timing belt on a Land Rover

You should also stock up on a special key for belt tension, a set of heads and keys, as well as pieces of cloth.

To replace an element:

  1. We put the car on the pit and fix it securely.
  2. Remove the starter and unscrew the candles, as well as the timing cover.
  3. Secure the camshafts and flywheel with clamps.
  4. We unscrew the bypass rollers and remove the old belt. It should be removed starting from the crankshaft.
  5. Install new rollers loosely.
  6. Put on the new belt counterclockwise. In this case, all part marks and synchronization elements must match.
  7. Turn the roller counterclockwise so that its groove matches the mark on the same part.
  8. Tighten all the gear mounting bolts, remove the crankshaft and flywheel retainers.
  9. Rotate the crankshaft two turns clockwise, then reinstall the clamps.
  10. Check if all marks match. If everything matches, you can pick up the car in the reverse order, as indicated above.

Additional operations and recommendations

The manufacturer recommends combining this work with replacing the injection pump drive belt. You can also change the straps to other components and assemblies. But this is advisable only with noticeable wear of all elements. In other cases, you can limit yourself to installing a new timing belt.

This work requires attention and experience. Therefore, it is better to do this with a partner. And if you doubt your abilities, it is better to turn to professionals.
