10 Cars Floyd Mayweather Bought And Then Sold Because They Were Bad (And 10 He Kept For Himself)

As a car collector, Floyd Mayweather is utterly charming. He has the money and connections to buy whatever he wants, and his impulsiveness has led to some interesting and downright bizarre purchases. Even stranger are his mind-boggling car-buying habits. A car dealer alone claims to have sold more than 100 cars to Mayweather in 18 years. The dealership specializes in luxury cars that are difficult to acquire, and Mayweather is their top customer.

The seller said that Mayweather often goes shopping and calls in the middle of the night. Sometimes he knows exactly what he wants and asks for it to be delivered to his house within a few hours. He even asked his car salesman to fly out of state, pick up the car, and drive it to Mayweather's house.

Mayweather's aide described frequent trips to the bank shortly before closing and picking up bags full of cash that goes towards paying for his new cars. The dealership also admitted that they had to purchase a larger adding machine specifically for Mayweather's expensive and regular purchases.

Even more curious is the fact that Mayweather doesn't drive many of his cars, at least not in the way the manufacturers intended. However, his collection testifies to his passion, even obsession, for luxury cars. Mayweather regularly updates his collection. Here are 10 cars he resold (and reasons), plus 10 cars he saved instead of putting them up for sale.

20 Sold: Mercedes Maybach 57

As a big fan of Mercedes and AMG, it pains me a little to write this, but the Maybach 57 really wasn't a great car. Maybach's main problem is that he is going through an identity crisis. Up front is a high-performance, hand-built AMG V12. The suspension is stiff and the car sits quite low. Wheels are light. On paper, it looks like it will be an amazing car to drive. The problem is that the car is longer than most people's living rooms, and it was designed primarily for the driver. Coming to a similar conclusion, Mayweather sold his schizophrenic sedan on eBay for just north of $150,000.

19 Saved by Huayra cost

via desktopbackground.org/

When it comes to mid-engined, rear-wheel drive hypercars, there's nothing better than the Pagani Huayra. However, unlike some of the cars Mayweather has sold, the Huayra uses some pretty clever technological tricks to make all that power usable. Aesthetically, Pagani looks a million times better than any of its competitors, with more angles than a high school geometry teacher. From a practical standpoint, there is simply nothing on earth that can offer as much driving pleasure as the Huayra. Acceleration is ferocious and handling is laser-like. The AMG-built 7.3-liter V12 is superior to any flashy Italian and has enough personality to be in its class.

18 Sold by: Bugatti Veyron

The Bugatti Veyron is on the list of many people's dream cars, but the reality of owning such a car is just a pain in the neck. As if to prove it, this was the second Veyron sold by Mayweather. Like Koenigsegg, even changing the oil is a headache. Apparently, the Veyron is held on by 10,000 bolts, and about half of them need to be unscrewed to remove the oil filter. This is also a two day process. Why? Well, the Veyron has 16 oil drain plugs, and the four-cylinder 16.5-liter engine needs 8 liters to be drained.

17 Saved by Maserati Gran Turismo

GranTurismo has been around for a long time - the first model left the factory in 1947 and it has continued to evolve and integrate new technologies into its design. The GT was not built to be the fastest car on the race track, but to travel long distances in unsurpassed comfort. It has a high-revving V8 engine that produces one of the most amazing exhaust sounds on the planet. The Skyhook suspension automatically adjusts to your driving style in real time. This makes the GranTurismo supremely comfortable, and the setup allows the car to move quickly.

16 Sold by: Ferrari Enzo

Mayweather's Ferrari Enzo has a rich history, and before he purchased it, the hypercar was owned by an Abu Dhabi sheikh. During the time that Mayweather owned it, he drove the car only 194 miles. You might be wondering how anyone can dislike the Enzo, but not only did Ferrari stuff the car with F1 tech, which made it pretty hard to drive, they also crammed a huge V12 in the back and gave it 650 horsepower. Indeed, the Ferrari Enzo is well known for being scary to drive. Not only that, they made getting on and off as difficult as possible due to the strange curve of the roof.

15 Saved by Mercedes Benz S600

One car that seems out of place in Mayweather's extensive collection is the 1996 Mercedes Benz S600. Mayweather admitted that this is the only car he will never sell. Mercedes has always been designed to ride hard, and despite the somewhat substandard build quality by Mercedes standards, the big V12 means the S600 punches a lot more than its weight. The perfect seating position and beautifully designed dashboard make driving the S600 a real pleasure. Styling-wise, the car looks like it was designed by a Cubist, and its width and girth give it a slightly heavy look. Still, it doesn't take much to make a Mercedes look stunning, and Mayweather has plenty of reasons to love his humble S600.

14 Sold by: Rolls-Royce Phantom

In theory, it's hard not to like the Rolls Royce too much, but for a driving enthusiast like the Mayweather, it's not exactly the right car. The Phantom has an incredibly long wheelbase and extended hood. It weighs somewhere around 6,000 pounds and is a large and heavy machine. This wouldn't be a problem if the Phantom had an engine capable of pulling all that weight, but it's powered by a 6.75-liter V12, giving it a 0-kph time of a decidedly mediocre 60 seconds. The main problem with the Phantom 5.7 is that it doesn't really stand out; instead, it tries to maintain some sort of balance between all of its elements, which makes driving somewhat boring.

13 Rescued: Lamborghini Murcielago

It's clear that Floyd Mayweather loves his Italian supercars and he has an extensive Lamborghini collection, including this cute Murcielago. This Lamborghini is known not only for its gullwing doors, but also for its mid-mounted 12 hp V580 engine. While that may not sound like much compared to today's supercars, Lamborghini uses some electronic tricks and an all-wheel drive system to defy physics. Somewhere during production, Lamborghini engineers decided to strip the car of everything that was not considered necessary in the pursuit of weight reduction. This included replacing as much of the interior and chassis as possible with as much carbon fiber as possible.

12 Sold by: Mercedes McLaren

via download-wallpapersfree.blogspot.com

In 2006, Mercedes and McLaren embarked on an ambitious project. Despite a bad season in Formula 1, they wanted to pack everything they had learned into a Mercedes and sell it to crazy people. Undoubtedly, it was an interesting idea, but there were some serious flaws that remained unrepaired. First, there are the brakes, which may have been ideal for a professional racer, but it turns out that normal people don't like being hit on the windshield every time they need to slow down. The second major problem was the transmission, which often broke down and needed to be replaced, but because breakdowns were so common, there was often a long wait as they broke faster than Mercedes could manufacture them.

11 Saved: Bentley Mulsanne

Mayweather owns a pair of Mulsannes, and while he is a competitor to the Rolls-Royce Phantom mentioned above, he is superior in every way. Unlike the Phantom, the Mulsanne is powered by a 6.75-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine, powerful, with linear power delivery and a deep, throaty exhaust sound. Mulsanne offers passengers the highest ride quality and disconnection from the outside world. However, it draws attention to the insane amount of torque on offer as it sprints to a top speed of 190 mph. It's a well-mannered car until you hit the gas pedal and then it has all the acceleration and torque to beat any hot hatchback.

10 Sold by: Chevrolet Indy Beretta

via commons.wikimedia.org

It looks a little out of place, but it's worth mentioning that this is a 1994 Chevrolet Beretta, Floyd Mayweather's first car. He recently admitted that he still has a soft spot for the Indy Beretta, despite it being one of the worst cars Chevrolet has ever made. The Beretta was a front wheel drive disaster with a 2 liter 4 cylinder engine. The car was relatively light, but the engine was still very weak. Cars weren't built to last, and a favorite modification of Beretta owners was to install a huge stereo system to drown out the noises from the various mechanical problems these cars had.

9 Saved by: LaFerrari

The award for the car from Mayweather's collection that most closely resembles a spaceship should go to his LaFerrari. A total of 499 were built and only available to serious collectors. So what makes a spaceship that can't be bought by a LaFerrari so attractive? Well, an electric hybrid 6.3-liter V12 and 950 hp. mostly. The electric motor gives instant throttle response before the V12 accelerates the car to about 5,000 rpm. The F7 1-speed transmission delivers lightning-fast gear changes, while aerodynamics can generate up to 800 pounds of downforce, keeping the car firmly on the road at any speed.

8 Sold: Mercedes S550

The S550 is not a bad car per se, but the story of why it was sold is so funny we had to include it in this article. One day Floyd woke up with no transport and needed to catch a flight to Atlanta. So he did what no sane person would do, he went out and bought a V8 S550 just to drive to the airport. He parked the car and got on the plane. About two months later, he was talking to his friend about his trip, and then he suddenly remembered that he still had a Mercedes S550 in the parking lot. One of Mayweather's aides was sent to pick up the car, which was quickly sold.

7 Rescued: Bugatti Chiron

The Chiron is a car that was created to change physics and usurp the Veyron as the world's fastest production car. An 8.0-litre, four-turbo W16 fossil-fuel engine was chosen over the hybrid to save weight. While the Veyron put out a measly 1183 hp, the Chiron leaves it far behind with its own 1479 hp. At top speed, it can drive a full tank of fuel in just 9 minutes. The steering isn't as clumsy as the Veyron's, thanks to a specially designed electric steering system and an all-wheel drive system that uses 7 different algorithms at once to make all that speed manageable.

6 Sold by: Ferrari California

If this list of cars were based on looks alone, the Ferrari California would not be included. However, some of the things that contributed to its inclusion are terrible fuel economy and an inconvenient entertainment system. Compared to the Porsche 911, the California was overpriced and nowhere near as fun to drive. At the time of its launch, many journalists referred to it as a watered-down version of the Ferrari that subsequent models have referred to. The 2008 California had stiff dampers that kept it from moving in a straight line, but anti-roll bars and soft springs made it wallow in corners.

5 Saved by Porsche 911 Turbo Cabriolet

The 911 convertible is a rather peculiar choice. It is not the best-selling, not the most expensive and not the best model in the Porsche lineup. However, what it does well is processing. In corners, it can provide 1.03g of traction. It accelerates from 0 to 60mph in 2.7 seconds and has a braking distance of just 138 feet. It's entirely plausible to believe that the 911 Turbo was an exercise by Porsche to see how fast one of their cars would go around corners. The 911 Cabriolet is a supercar that is a lot of fun in one hand and ruffles your hair in the other.

4 Sold: Caparo T1

With a carbon fiber chassis and bodywork, the Caparo T1 is the most like a Formula 1 car that can be driven on the road. It's aimed at car enthusiasts who love spending weekends on the race track, but since it was launched, it's become more of a collector's car due to the fact that it breaks down so often. It has a power-to-weight ratio just north of 1,000 hp. per ton, which most supercars cannot achieve. Apparently, this was the only car that really scared Mayweather, and this was supposedly the reason for its sale.

3 Saved by Ferrari 599 GTB

Mayweather is so enamored with Italian supercars that we could fill this list with his Ferrari collection alone. However, the 599 is a bit special and for a while it held the Ferrari test track lap record. It can complete a gear shift before the clutch is released, in two-thirds of the time it takes the Enzo to shift. It has the same V12 engine as the Enzo, but is much lighter than a car with near-perfect weight distribution. The 599 is the Ferrari Purist Ferrari, with incredible straight-line traction and endless cornering grip.

2 Sold: Koenigsegg CCXR Trevita

The first car in Mayweather's pile of sold cars may seem like a surprising choice, but there are a lot of things about the Trevita that you might not like. Firstly, only two of these cars were produced. If you think you can jump on eBay and buy some aftermarket parts, you better think again. Another problem is that Koenigseggs are notorious for being incredibly expensive to maintain. An oil change alone costs more than a new Honda Civic. If a tire needs to be replaced, this should be done by a Koenigsegg technician due to the risk of wheel damage. Mayweather was keen to sell his rare hypercar because he was going to buy a $20 million yacht at the time.

1 Saved: Aston Martin One 77

via hdcarwallpapers.com

The Aston Martin One 77 is a car with an almost mythical status. They are extremely rare and apparently this was the main reason Mayweather bought them. The One 77 is powered by a 7.3-liter V12 engine producing 750 hp, making it the most powerful naturally aspirated car ever built. The race-spec suspension, visible through the rear window, is the most advanced suspension ever used. At full throttle, the sound coming from the V12 is a heart-rending scream that any Lamborghini owner would envy. Driving an Aston Martin is an experience that engages all your senses at the same time and is an exercise in pure excitement.
