The 10 Best Used Small SUVs

If you like the commanding driving position and rugged looks of an SUV, but want an economical car that's as easy to park as a hatchback, a small SUV might be just right for you.

There is a wide range of compact SUVs to choose from, some focused on comfort and practicality, others more sporty. Whether you are looking for an inexpensive option or something more luxurious, there is something for almost everyone. Here is our top 10 used small SUVs.

1. Peugeot 2008

On the outside, the current 2008 Peugeot (sold new as of 2019) is one of the most distinctive small SUVs around. The theme continues inside, with a futuristic dashboard that's actually more user-friendly than it first appears. The interior has a premium feel, with enough room for four adults and a boot that is one of the largest you'll find in this type of car. You can choose from a range of very efficient engines or even the all-electric e-2008 with a battery range of around 200 miles. All of them feel great behind the wheel and provide a comfortable ride.

The old 2008 version (sold from 2013 to 2019) isn't as roomy and doesn't look as bold, but it's still a good choice if you're on a budget.

2. Nissan Juke

There are good reasons why the Nissan Juke is one of the UK's most popular SUVs of any size. Its bold styling, efficient engines, rich equipment and ease of driving have huge appeal, even if the version sold new from 2010 to 2019 isn't particularly practical. The latest version of the Juke (pictured), sold new as of 2019, is much more spacious, making it a better fit for a family car. Fresher styling and the latest technology also give it a more modern feel.

Having a new Juke doesn't mean you should ignore the old version. If you can live with its relatively limited space, it still stands out in the car park, is fun to drive, and offers great value for money.

3. Skoda Karok

The Skoda Karoq is the largest car on this list, but it's actually quite a bit shorter than the Ford Focus. Despite its relatively modest size, Karoq has plenty of interior space. It has room for four large adults and has the largest trunk you'll find in this type of vehicle. Luggage for your two-week family vacation should arrive without fuss, even if you don't pack lightly.

And on this holiday trip, it's great - quiet and comfortable on the highway and brisk in the narrow village streets, although more powerful engine options are better if you regularly make long trips. All models are very well equipped, good value for money and low maintenance costs.

4. Volkswagen T-Rock

If you're looking for elegant styling, consider the Volkswagen T-Roc: it shares many mechanical parts with the Skoda Karoq, but they look and feel very different. The T-Roc looks sportier on the outside and more premium on the inside. It also feels sportier to drive, although it's no less comfortable. There's even a high-performance T-Roc R that's faster than some sports cars.

Sleek styling means the T-Roc isn't as practical as the Karoq - larger passengers might find head and shoulder space a bit cramped in the back seat, and you'll have to pack more carefully for this two-week getaway. yet it is still practical enough for families. The T-Roc also costs a little more than some other small SUVs, but you get plenty of standard equipment and an impressively high-quality interior for your money.

5. Ford Puma

There are strong arguments that the Ford Puma is actually the best of the small SUVs.

While it's compact and easy to park, it has a lot of qualities that make it a great family car, starting with its roomy and comfortable interior. There's additional storage under the boot floor, which Ford calls the Megabox. This provides a lot of extra space, especially for carrying tall things. And it's made of hard-wearing plastic that can be washed with a hose (there's a drain plug at the bottom), so it's perfect for wearing muddy shoes and the like.

You also get a lot of standard features, and just as importantly, the Puma is a huge amount of fun to drive, feeling responsive and sporty whether you're getting from point A to B or having fun on a winding back road.

6. Seat Arona

The Seat Arona is a good example of the benefits of choosing a small SUV over a conventional hatchback. The Arona is significantly smaller than the midsize Seat Leon hatchback, but it has a larger trunk and an equally spacious interior. You also get the usual SUV benefit of a higher seating position, making it easier to get in and out of the car if you have mobility issues. Putting the kids in the car has also become easier.

The sporty style of the Arona is reflected in the driving experience. It's not as fun as the Ford Puma, but it feels light and responsive, making city driving a breeze and long-distance drives enjoyable. It is also excellent value for money with low running costs for all models.

7.Mazda CX-3.

You may not think of Mazda as a premium brand, but the CX-3 does feel like a premium product on par with an Audi or BMW. The interior in particular is a fine piece of design that looks and feels head and shoulders above the rest. The controls and dashboard are also very easy to use, and the high-spec models have things you'd normally find in much more expensive cars, such as a head-up display.

If you're looking for a family car, there are more practical options than the CX-3, but it has enough room to meet the needs of most singles and couples. It feels great to drive and is also very fuel efficient.

8. Honda XP-V

Sometimes space is your priority. If so, consider the Honda HR-V because there's a lot of usable space in a relatively small package. The space for you and your passengers is the same as in the Skoda Karoq, despite the fact that the HR-V is a couple of inches shorter. If you're tall, the Honda is actually better because it has more headroom, especially in the back, even in models with a sunroof (they often reduce headroom a lot). Its trunk is slightly smaller than the Karoq's, but it's still huge by small SUV standards.

In typical Honda HR-V fashion, it's easy to drive, comfortable, well equipped and seems to last a long time. The i-DTEC diesel engine is impressively powerful and quiet, with an average fuel consumption of over 50 mpg, according to official figures.

9. Citroen C3 Aircross

The Citroen C3 Aircross stands out from the crowd thanks to its massive rounded shape inside and out. It has a lot of character, especially if you choose one of the many bold paint colors available. It has the substance to match its style, comparing it particularly well to other small SUVs for comfort and practicality.

The C3 Aircross in particular has lovely soft and supportive seats where you can really relax on a long journey. There's plenty of room inside, and even tall passengers should have plenty of room in the back, which isn't true of every car on this list. The trunk is big enough for a folded stroller and a few shopping bags, and there's plenty of useful storage space in the cabin. The C3 Aircross is economical and good value for money.

10. Hyundai Kona Electric

Given the popularity of small SUVs, it's surprising that there are only a handful of electric vehicles among them. We mentioned the Peugeot e-2008 and it's a great car, but the Hyundai Kona Electric is just as good, if not the best choice for some. It's not as roomy as the Peugeot, but Kona Electric models with a top-notch 64 kWh battery have a much longer range, up to 279 miles, according to official figures.

This means it's easier to use if you're on long trips or don't have constant access to charging points. The 39kWh models can go up to 179 miles - less than the Peugeot, but still enough for the needs of many people. The Kona Electric is also comfortable to ride, very well equipped and just looks great.
