The Paris-Bordeaux-Paris race, which began on June 13, 1895, is considered the first in the history of the automobile industry, despite the fact that the Paris-Rouen race, held almost a year earlier, was perceived more as a competition than a race.

The Paris-Bordeaux-Paris race was attended by 30 riders in cars with internal combustion and steam engines, of which only nine overcame a difficult route of 1178 km. The race regulations stipulated that the car must be a four-seater. It is for this reason that the top prize went to Paul Cohlin, who finished third after 59 hours and 48 minutes. The fastest was Emile Levassor, who reached Paris in a Panhard & Levassor car in 48 hours and 48 minutes at an average speed of over 24 km/h. In second place with a time of 54 hours and 35 minutes was Louis Rigulo in a two-seater Peugeot.
