Electric cars are not new to the automotive market. In the early 16th century, concepts for internal combustion engines, electric and steam vehicles were developed. Work on the latter was quickly stopped, but the topic of electric vehicles developed for quite a long time, as evidenced by the speed record set in November 1901.

The designer and driver was Andrew Riker, who had worked on electric motors since 1884 and founded the Riker Electric Vehicle Company four years later, launching the Ricker Victoria in 1900.

For the speed record, Riker prepared a special car called the Torpedo Racer. It was a light four-wheeled machine, consisting of an engine, frame and wheels. Basically, he was disembodied. Thanks to this, he accelerated to almost 92 km/h during the speed test. The record lasted 10 years, but Ricoeur soon turned to the development of internal combustion engines.
