Engineers from Mladá Bolesav were faced with the task of creating a popular car for the motorization of the population. The first prototype, called Sparatak, was built on December 19, 1953, and a year later a small number of vehicles were tested. Mass production started in 1955 and continued until 1959, when the first Octavia appeared, which was a development of the Spartak concept. By that time, more than 85 copies had been produced.

The Skoda 440 had not yet proven to be a real mass car due to its rather high price (over 27 25 CZK), which could translate into more than 1.1 times the average salary in Czechoslovakia, but it was a popular, solid car. It looked modern and had a fairly economical four-cylinder engine of less than 40 liters and 20 hp. Suffice it to say that at that time the Warsaw M50 was produced in Poland, which generated 2.1 hp. from a 200 liter engine and weighed almost kg more.
