20+ Unflattering Cars You Wouldn't Like To Be Driving

Most cars are beautiful works of art designed for us to show off. Their coloring is perfect, their interiors are like plush, futuristic living rooms, and their engines are something mechanics dream of.

But, as with everything else, sometimes manufacturers and designers make mistakes. Really miss. Cars that could look amazing end up looking downright ugly due to poor color or body shape choices. Instead of turning their heads and looking at these cars in awe, they feel nothing but disgust and pity. Here are some of the ugliest cars ever made.

Chevy Chevette

The Chevrolet Chevette was a subcompact car that looked like a deer in its headlights. It had a station wagon body but was otherwise ugly and featureless.

It was sold in the 1970s and 1980s and reached the peak of its popularity in 1979 and 1980 when the most models were sold. While holding the title of one of the smallest Chevrolet cars, it is also one of the ugliest.

Oldsmobile Dynamic 88

There is nothing dynamic about the Oldsmobile Dynamic 88, except for how big and ugly its boxy shape was. The Dynamic, manufactured by Oldsmobile, has been on the market for over 50 years, with its debut dating back to 1949.

Even after so many years, the Dynamic has changed little over the years and has remained mostly stagnant and outdated. Due to the lack of updates and the car's lackluster appearance, sales eventually plummeted and the Dynamic was discontinued in 1999.

Studebaker Cabriolet

You could say that there are things that should just be left alone, and Studebaker was one of them. The convertible's extra-long fenders make it look like some kind of spaceship, and compared to other 1950s models, it was an eyesore.

The Studebaker Convertible was never mass-produced because its chassis was not suitable for a great convertible. Studebaker continued to make other, more attractive models until the late 1960s, when the company went bankrupt and closed the store.

Satellite (Sputnik)

The car most prevalent in East Germany from the 1950s to the 1990s, the Trabant was the idiosyncratic and odd car that marked the breakup of the East German bloc.

The car was made as cheaply as possible so that it could be mass-produced for a large percentage of the population. It lacked a tachometer and no gas tank inside, which meant that drivers had to pour gasoline from under the car's hood.

Pontiak Fiero

The Pontiac Fiero made this list not only as an unattractive car, but also as unsafe and dangerous to drive. Not only did the name "Fiero" mean "fire" and "wild", but the car itself was prone to spontaneous combustion.

Initially, when the car was released in 1983, it sold well. It wasn't until consumers saw the growing number of reports of cars on fire that sales dropped and the car was discontinued.

Mercury Capri

Just by looking at a photo or seeing one of them drive past you down the street, it's easy to see why the Mercury Capri made it onto this list of ugly cars.

The Mercury Capri was marketed as a pony car, but more like a station wagon. Initially, the car was only sold in Australia, and it wasn't until years later that it was shipped overseas and sold in the US.

Cadillac Cimarron

Considered a huge rename disaster, the Cadillac Cimarron is probably the car most people don't know about or remember. There was nothing special about it, and it had an outdated, ugly boxy body that buyers wanted to stay away from.

Before being presented to the public, Cadillac representatives admitted that they knew that the car would be a commercial failure and embarrass the company, but, oddly enough, decided to sell it anyway.

Pontiak Actek

Produced alongside the Buick Rendezvous, the Pontiac Aztek was a crossover that should never have been. General Motors was forced to come up with a new car, and instead of taking the time to create something truly unique, they decided to make a crossover instead.

Customers ended up having to return the Aztek to General Motors within the first few months after it was released for a mass recall due to a faulty fuel delivery system.

Buick Electra

A full-size car first introduced by Buick in the late 1950s, the Electra looked more like a metal surfboard with wheels than a respectable car.

It was advertised and marketed as a luxury car, although other than its name it had little to offer in terms of luxury or performance. If that wasn't enough, the car was difficult to steer and park as it was 18 feet long from head to tail.

Chevrolet El Camino

While the El Camino was an iconic car from the 1980s, if the car were redone in 2020 it would be pretty ugly. The El Camino was sort of a hybrid, taking parts from a truck and parts from a coupe and blending it into what was supposed to be a regular car.

This ended up confusing many buyers as to what it was. This consumer uncertainty, combined with the Camino's boxy front end and boat-like overall shape, is how the car managed to make it onto this list.

Chevrolet Malibu

Named after a beach holiday, the 1990s Chevrolet Malibu was anything but a vacation. There was nothing special or exciting about this ride, and it didn't have any features that set it apart from the competition.

The trunk of the Malibu looked like two hot dogs lying side by side, and the front of the car was almost identical to the Chevrolet Impala. Since then, newer, more advanced Chevrolet Malibu models have been sold, but the 1990s models were just plain ugly.

Citroen BH

The Citroën BX, developed in the late 1980s, was an ugly car that was incredibly popular in Europe. The BX model replaced the Citroën GS, which was more popular than the BX.

The BX designers drew inspiration from other Volvo models, and the engine was based on the Peugeot 405. If the looks weren't bad enough, the car was lightweight and used hydraulic suspension, making it ride over bumps.

Chevrolet Impala

In the wild, the impala looks like a gazelle: light, agile and majestic; the exact opposite of the 1990s Chevrolet Impala.

The ugliest feature of the Impala was the large boxy trunk, which was pretty much the only thing that set the Impala apart from other similar Chevrolet models. Even though the Impala is named after a fast mammal, it's not that fast on its own and only has 180 horsepower.

ford flex

Another ugly innovation from Ford Motors, the Flex was designed to replace the Ford Freestyle minivan. It was classified as an SUV and had components from both SUVs and minivans, which was evident in its design.

The Flex was long and boxy, which looked unattractive despite the innovative aspirations of its designers. For now, the Flex is still around, with a new model coming out in 2020, although there are plans to discontinue this model once it's released.

AMC Gremlin

For a car that looks like a hunched over troll, the name AMC Gremlin was perfect for it.

Like the water-hating creatures of the same name, the drivers of this piece of junk can also get angry because they drive a car that looks like a baby carriage. The AMC Gremlin was sold by the American Automobile Corporation from 1970 to 1978 and eventually went out of business entirely eight years later in 1988.

Dodge Aspen

Before Dodge became popular with muscle cars like the Charger and Challenger, Dodge had a history of making mistakes and the Aspen was one of them.

It was a boat-shaped compact car that was sold alongside the Plymouth Volaré, which was its two-door counterpart. Dodge discontinued the Aspen and Durango Hybrid in 2008 due to factory closures, so thankfully neither will be restored any time soon.

Ford Mustang II

The Ford Mustang went through a lot of body modifications, but the second-generation Ford Mustang, produced from 1973 to 1978, was by far one of the ugliest models. Its headlights were too large for a car, making it look like a tin bug on wheels.

Its front fenders were out of proportion to the rest of the car and looked out of place. Ford ended up making the changes needed to get the Mustang back together, but the Mustang II is a painful reminder of what it used to be.

DeLorean DMC-12

Best known for his appearance in Back to the FutureThe DeLorean is more of a pop culture classic than anything else. When it comes to time travel, the DeLorean DMC-12 is a big fail.

The creator wanted to make a car that was different and innovative, but these differences led to the DeLorean ultimately failing as a product. It sold poorly and will most likely never appear again.

Plymouth Prowler

The Prowler was based on a 1990s concept car of the same name, and that was the concept car it was meant to remain. The completely unattractive car also performed poorly and had a tiny trunk, which was impractical.

Poor performance aside, the Prowler's price never stayed the same as Chrysler raised the price every few months without explanation.

Renault Twingo

Introduced in 1992 by French automaker Renault, the Twingo is a compact four-seater city car. The Twingo's shape and size make it impractical for large people or those with large families.

In addition to being small and beetle-shaped, the Twingo also lacks performance, with all of its standard models producing just 90 horsepower. The Twingo has just received another update: Renault has launched its third generation of vehicles in 2019.

Nissan Juke

A newer concept manufactured and sold by Nissan, the Juke is an SUV that resembles a frog. Designed to be fun and enjoyable to drive, the Juke ended up being something that buyers ran away from.

In 2017, Nissan retired the Juke in the US and replaced it with the Nissan Kicks. The Juke lasted only seven years in the US and has sold poorly in the past few years.

Aston Martin Lagonda

Designed to be futuristic and ahead of its time, the Aston Martin Lagonda has yet to reach a time period where its design is attractive.

The bodywork of the Lagonda is generally flat and wide, and from a distance it may appear to be a stretched-out Skylark rather than the six-figure car it was. These cars took 2,200 man-hours to build and only 1970 units were sold from the late 1980s to the mid-25s.
