During the Great Patriotic War, the last competition took place only in April 1940. At that time, the distance of 1486 km in 8 hours 54 minutes was covered by the crew of Fritz Huschke von Hanstein and Walter Baumer in the BMW 328 coupe. The return to racing took place on June 21, 1947, when the organizers prepared a 1827 km long track on public roads in Italy. The competition ended on June 22, when, after 16 hours and 16 minutes, the crew of Clemente Biondetti, Emilio Romano, arrived at the finish line in a three-liter Alfa Romeo 8C 2900B Touring coupe. The second and third places were taken by competitors on a much smaller Cistalia 202 (engine less than 1.1 l). Biondetti dominated racing in the following years - he won until 1949, and from 1948 - driving a Ferrari 166.

The 1947 Mille Miglia was the last race before Ferrari's dominance. From the 1948 Mille Miglia until the end of the competition, the podium was occupied by crews in cars from Maranello, and most often these were the highest places.
