2170 (21700) cells in Tesla 3 batteries better than NMC 811 cells in _future_

Electrek drew some interesting facts about the Tesla Model 3 battery from the Tesla stock market report and statements from its representatives. There are many indications that 2170 items are included in it, they are 2-3 years ahead of the world. This makes the car lighter, and competitors have a problem reaching the same distances.

Recall that cells are the basic building blocks of an electric vehicle battery. An individual cell may be an independent battery (such as watch or smartphone batteries), but it may also be part of a much larger whole controlled by the BMS. In electric vehicles, a battery is always a collection of cells and a BMS:

Electrek drew some information from Tesla's quarterly report and shareholder conversations about 2170 links*)They are taller, have a larger diameter and capacity than the 18650 cells used in the Model S and Model X. Tesla boasts a higher nickel content. Now for the fun part: Tesla NCA (Nickel-Cobalt-Aluminum) cells must have a lower cobalt content than NMC 811 (Nickel-Cobalt-Manganese) cells.**)that other manufacturers will only produce in the future!

What are the implications of these changes? Colossal:

  • Tesla Model 3 weighs the same as combustion cars in this segment; if he used old 18650 cells, it would be heavier,
  • lower cobalt content means lower production costs of batteries and therefore less susceptibility to higher prices for them in the world,
  • high energy density in the battery means less cost per kilowatt-hour or 100 kilometers.

> New battery technology = 90 kWh Nissan Leaf and 580 km range by around 2025

Portal Electrek does not risk this claim, but the stories show that Tesla with its batteries is about 2-3 years ahead of the competition.... This is a technological advantage achieved over the past 10 years.

*) Tesla calls these cells "2170", sometimes "21-70", the rest of the world uses a long designation: 21700. This means 21 millimeters in diameter and 70 millimeters in height. For comparison, 18650 cells are 18 millimeters in diameter and 65 millimeters high.

**) both NCM (eg Basf) and NMC (eg BMW) designations are used.
