The Volkswagen Rabbit marked its presence in American automotive history as the first foreign car produced in that country since World War II.
The version for the American market was not much different from the European one. The most important change was the use of rectangular headlights. In addition, Rabbit was not offered with the weakest 1.1 and 1.3 petrol engines with 50 and 60 hp.
The production history of the first generation Rabbit ended on August 22, 1984, when the last copy of the American Golf I left the Westmoreland plant in Pennsylvania. However, production at the plant did not end. A year later, construction began on the second-generation Golf.
