This one of the most successful racers, nicknamed "Professor", was born in Saint-Chamon, near Lyon. At the age of 14, he started karting. In 1975 he won the French Karting Championship and in 1978 he started racing in Formula 3. Success in this racing class led him to Formula One.

He spent his first season with the McLaren team, and in his debut he took a productive sixth place. Unfortunately, in the future he was not so lucky - there were frequent breakdowns and accidents, so the first season was not considered successful. The next year he started driving a Renault. His biggest successes were when he returned to McLaren in 1984. He won three World Championships for McLaren in 1985, 1986 and 1989. The last, fourth title he won in his last season, in 1993.
