Founded in Milan, Alfa Romeo at the very beginning of its history was called ALFA - it was an abbreviation for Anonima Lombarda Fabbrica Automobili and meant the Lombard Automobile Plant.

Initially, it was associated with the French company Darracq. It was Alexander Darrak, together with a group of Italian investors, who decided to build a plant in the suburbs of Milan. ALFA was already a different company.

Immediately, in the year of foundation, it was possible to design the first vehicle that was not technologically related to Darracq cars. It was the Alfa 24 HP, a big car with a 4.1-litre engine, which was a big difference from the small Darracqs that had been produced until now, which didn't sell very well. Giuseppe Merosi, who remained in a senior position with the company until 1926, was responsible for the design of the first Alfa.

Alfa 24 HP turned out to be successful and was produced for 4 years. Back in 1911, a special racing version (Tipo Corsa) with a two-seat body was prepared, which took part in the Targa Florio races. Thus began Alfa's successful motorsport adventure.

We can't write about Alfa Romeo yet. The second part of the name appeared later. In 1915, Nicola Romeo became the new head of the company, and the official name Alfa Romeo was introduced in 1920 with the debut of the luxurious Alfa Romeo Torpedo 20/30 HP.
