3 oil change myths

3 oil change myths They say where there are two Poles, there are three opinions. However, if the survey were conducted among mechanics, then the vast majority would probably say that the engine oil should be changed every 15-20 thousand. km or every 1 year. For some reason, many motorists have a different opinion on this matter. As a result, several myths come into use.

Myth 1: Long Life oils guarantee us the ability to change the oil even every 30 thousand. km

We already know from TV commercials that all oils are of the absolute highest quality, withstand the toughest tests, the lowest temperatures outside the car and the highest temperatures inside the engine. So the marketers were faced with the difficult task of selling Kowalski his oil instead of 10 others. Isn't one possible solution just to call the oil "long-lasting"?

Of course, we are not saying that there is no difference between regular oil from a well-known manufacturer and their "long-lived" oil, because there definitely is. We only remind you that the oil manufacturer risks not his car, but ours. For a turbocharger replacement or engine repair, we will pay faster, not the oil manufacturer.

Besides, when it comes to premature failure of the turbocharger, would any of us think of making a claim against the oil manufacturer? Indeed, a lot of things affect the "turbo" state, from the driver's driving style to ordinary human happiness or bad luck associated with this instance.

So let's remember that going against the recommendations of the mechanics and the car manufacturer, suggesting more frequent oil changes, we act at our own peril and risk. It's worth asking ourselves if we trust the manufacturer of our car more or the manufacturer of the long life oil.

Myth 2: I heard that someone does not change the oil at all

Of course (oh horror!) there are drivers, especially older cars, who constantly ignore oil changes and do it every 50 or 100 thousand. km. However, as is usually the case, first, first of all - at any moment a major failure can happen to them. Secondly, if someone is lucky, this does not mean that we will be the same. There is no point in tempting fate.

Recall that at present the automotive industry is developing at a rapid pace. 1.2 or 1.6 liter engines put out much more horsepower than ever before. And all this, of course, while maintaining low fuel consumption and caring for the environment. It is not difficult to guess that such stripped-down engines need the highest quality lubrication. And oils, unfortunately, lose their properties over time, and this applies to any type of engine. Therefore, do not risk it and change the oil in accordance with the recommendations of the mechanics and manufacturers of our car.

Myth 3: Oil changes are more important in new cars than used cars (or vice versa)

Regular oil changes with the oil recommended by the vehicle manufacturer are equally important for both new and used vehicles. For new vehicles, this step will be necessary to maintain the warranty.

In cars after the warranty period, but still young, it is also worth changing the oil. Even if we plan to sell the car in the near future, it is easier to find a buyer when there are records in the service book confirming regular oil changes. A person interested in buying it will be able to assume that replacing a turbocharger or repairing an engine is a melody of the distant future. This should increase our chances of a profitable car sale.

It is also worth changing the oil in used and old cars. Even if it extends the life of some parts by one or two years, we are always a little ahead. Or maybe in the meantime we decide that we planned to change the car anyway and skip the expenses? Or at least the prices of spare parts will fall a little during this period?

Of course, there are not only these three myths when it comes to oil changes, but basically they all come down to one common denominator. It is, of course, about finding savings where there are none. We can buy 3 liters of branded oil with online delivery for PLN 5-130. In addition, the oil filter, work in the workshop, together it will be 150 PLN. Is it worth risking a serious breakdown for such money, for the elimination of which we will pay several or tens of times more??
