3 things to check before an inspection

Are you ready for your next annual inspection in North Carolina? You'll never have to worry about passing a vehicle inspection when Chapel Hill Tire is at your side. While our technicians are experienced in performing advanced vehicle inspections and the repairs required to pass them, here are three things you can do to get your vehicle ready.

Address Check Engine Indicators

If any warning lights come on in your car, it's always best to fix the problems they indicate immediately. Not only are these problems often a serious threat to your engine, but they can also prevent you from getting your annual vehicle inspection. A professional mechanic can help you find any problems that might prevent you from getting through the inspection and making the necessary repairs.

Am I exempt from outlier checks?

Before you go for your annual vehicle inspection, you may want to consider whether you also need emissions check. This is currently required in 22 counties in North Carolina (including Wake County) and may expand to other counties in the future. However, there are potential exemptions for NC emissions checks, even in counties that require them. These exceptions include:

  • Certain light duty vehicles less than three years old or less than 70,000 miles old.
  • Cars manufactured before 1995
  • Diesel vehicles
  • Vehicles registered as agricultural vehicles

If you're still not sure if you need an emission test, seek the advice of a professional mechanic. They will make sure you have everything you need for your annual license plate renewal.

Check Your Vehicle's Security Features

The main purpose of the annual NC vehicle inspection is to make sure that your vehicle does not pose a threat to you or any other driver on the road. To stay safe on the road, you need (at a minimum) working brakes, headlights, and turn signals. If you're good at inspecting and repairing these parts of your car yourself, you might want to take a look before the inspection. If not, don't worry! Your professional mechanic will easily find and fix these problems so that you pass the inspection without any problems.
