5 Essential Facts to Know About Partial Zero Emission Vehicles (PZEV)

If you've always assumed that Partial Zero Emissions Vehicles (PZEV) were something of an electric vehicle, it's time for a little automotive lesson. Here we explain what all these letters mean and how they affect you, if at all.

What is it

PZEVs are gasoline-powered vehicles whose engines are designed with advanced emissions control. They have significantly lower emissions than standard vehicles and no evaporative emissions. These vehicles are designed to meet the stringent emissions requirements required in California.

Additional requirements

For a vehicle to receive the PZEV designation, it must meet certain requirements. It must meet federal standards known as Ultra Low Emission Vehicle (SULEV). In addition, no evaporative emissions must be verified and system components must be covered by a 15 year/150,000 mile warranty.

Why PZEV Matters

PZEVs were designed as a means for automakers to compromise what the California Air Resources Board, which is in charge of vehicle environmental requirements, had set for vehicle emissions (which no one really could meet). The mandate required automakers to build zero-emission vehicles. If they failed to comply with this, they would be banned from selling cars in California, leading to the PZEV.

Benefits of using GPR

Some states, especially California, offer discounts, incentives, and tax credits on the purchase of these vehicles. In addition, the cars provide decent fuel economy, although it is usually closer to the current model year averages. For those looking to reduce emissions and improve fuel economy, there are AT-PZEV (Advanced Technology) electric or hybrid models.

Other states to follow

While the PZEV promotion originated in California, several other states are also following suit, aiming to cut emissions by 30 percent, which is required by the end of 2016. Even if these types of vehicles aren't common in your area right now, there's a good chance they will be very soon.

Even if you don't live in California, PZEV offers you the opportunity to help solve environmental issues related to vehicle emissions. While it may seem counterintuitive to buy a car based solely on emissions rather than fuel economy or power, there's definitely something to be said for helping to deliver cleaner air. If you're concerned about your vehicle's emissions or need service for your PZEV, AvtoTachki can help.
