5 Hidden Car Drains You Should Always Keep Clean

To prevent moisture from accumulating in the car, manufacturers provide for the placement of drainage holes. Some of them are equipped with plugs, and then the drainage process depends entirely on the actions of car owners, and some are constantly open, and water immediately drains through them as it appears, but their cleaning requires the intervention of a motorist.

5 hidden car drains you should always keep clean

Fuel tank drain

This element performs the function of removing water from under the fuel tank cap. If this drain becomes clogged, rain or melt water can be concentrated at the neck and cause corrosion, and can also enter the fuel tank.

In addition, the clogged hole loses its ability to remove fuel residues that can collect here during refueling the car. Compressed air is most often used to clean the drain hole.

Drainage channels in the doors

Moisture often accumulates in the internal cavities of car doors. If it is not removed from there in a timely manner, it contributes to corrosion. In addition, water can damage window lift mechanisms.

To prevent such problems, drainage channels are made in the doors. But since they are in the lower parts of the doors, this quickly leads to clogging. And to get to these channels, most often you have to bend the gum on the lower edges of the doors.

Drain hole at the bottom of the trunk

Water tends to accumulate at the bottom of the luggage compartment of the car. To remove it, a drain hole is made in the trunk floor. As a rule, it is located under the spare wheel.

If this drainage element is clogged, then the resulting puddle under the spare wheel may not be immediately noticed by the car owner. As a result, unwanted dampness is created in the luggage compartment.

To prevent this from happening, you must:

  • regularly check the condition of the bottom of the trunk under the spare wheel;
  • if there is water under it, immediately clean the drain hole;
  • if necessary, replace worn-out rubber plugs.

Drainage hole for draining condensate in the bottom of the car

The water condensate formed during the operation of the car air conditioner is discharged outside the car through a drainage hole located in the bottom of the car. This hole is connected to the bottom of the evaporative element of the car's climate system.

If the hole is clogged, the condensate formed in the air conditioner will penetrate directly into the passenger compartment. Sometimes getting to the drainage of the car's air conditioning system on its own is problematic. In such a case, it is better to contact a specialist.

Drainage hole in sunroof

The hatch located on the roof of the car, when closed, must provide tightness that does not allow water to penetrate into the passenger compartment. For this, a drainage hole is provided in the hatch. If this hole becomes clogged, water can enter directly into the passenger compartment and onto the passengers in it.

Usually this drainage element is cleaned with a long wire.
