5 important things to know about car storage

Even if your vehicle has only been idle for a few weeks, it is important that you take steps to store it properly or you risk mechanical problems due to disuse, some of which are critical. Outdoor storage should be avoided whenever possible, as dampness can cause serious problems throughout the vehicle. A dry location, such as an old barn, will do, but a garage with electricity is ideal.

Car preparation

It is recommended to inflate the tires to the recommended PSI indicated on the tyre, and thoroughly clean the vehicle and change the oil. Add conditioner to a full tank of gasoline and be sure to let the car run for at least five minutes after adding it to allow the chemicals to completely pass through the engine system to get it in storage shape. This is also a great time to change various other fluids such as engine coolant, hydraulic clutch and brake fluid, and windshield washer fluid. A full tank of gasoline fights oxidation.

Prepare a place

A dry, clean and safe place is best. Once you've chosen your location, clear a spot for your vehicle and lay down a sheet or tarp to hold your vehicle on. You can also purchase a car cover that will protect your car.

Disconnect the battery

Before you do this permanently, make sure you know any codes needed to reconnect the radio after disconnecting the battery. Store the battery in a cool, dry place such as a basement, or leave it inside a car, disconnected or connected to a charger.

Forget it

While you might be tempted to get down and start the car now and then, don't be tempted! This can be more devastating than leaving the car all alone until you're ready to wake it up. You can even plug the exhaust pipe with steel wool to keep small rodents from climbing onto the nice soft bed inside your car seats.

cover it up

You can also purchase a car cover that will keep dust out and also prevent water or water vapor from building up on the vehicle. The best type of cover for long term storage would be a breathable material that is relatively thick and will be very protective.

Keeping your vehicle private can be a tedious process, but following these steps will ensure your vehicle is ready to go when you're ready to use it!
