5 things to consider before buying a turbo for your car

If you want to improve the performance of your car, you should consider a turbo kit. A turbocharger is essentially an exhaust gas-driven air compressor that can generate power by forcing air into the engine at a much higher pressure.

When you're ready to invest in a turbo kit, you need to make sure you're getting all the parts and components you need to give your car the power it's been craving. 

It is only natural that you have a lot of questions and you could use some referrals when making a purchase. There are many makes, models and different prices of turbo kits on the market, but it is best to research everything that is bothering you before buying.

Therefore, here we will tell you five things that you should consider before buying a turbo engine for your car.

1.- Is everything there?

Make sure all parts, accessories, clamps, silicone hoses, timing and fuel control components are included in the package in addition to the main components. In a word, check that this is a complete kit containing everything you need to install it correctly.

2.- All ball bearings.

Find a ball bearing turbo kit that is much stronger and more durable than a standard thrust bearing turbo. The BB turbos also shorten the turbocharger's spin time, resulting in less turbo lag. Ceramic ball bearings are considered indestructible and do not retain heat, making them the most common types. Ball bearing turbines are considered the industry standard for strong and durable turbines.

3.- There is nothing cooler than intercooler

Make sure your kit includes an intercooler. Since most turbo kits operate in the 6-9 psi forced induction range and run on exhaust gases, most of them generate huge amounts of hot air. The intercooler uses ambient air that is forced into the car while driving to cool this hot air produced by the turbo. 

The cooled air is compressed and the more air is held at the same relative PSI, the more air can be forced into the engine. Cooling the engine not only makes it more efficient and safe, but also provides more power.

4.- Do your exhaust valve system a favor

A purge valve should also be included with your turbo kit. This valve vents unused air that enters the pressure tube between shifts or at idle. This will allow air entering the engine from the turbo to enter the blower pipe when the throttle is closed. Instead of the air returning to the turbine and potentially causing damage, the air is expelled through a valve to the atmosphere. Thus, the purge valve cleans the system and prepares it for the next air charge.

5.- Get a guarantee

Turbines are highly stressed components, so it is imperative that you are protected in the event of a malfunction. From lubrication issues to installation errors, components can be compromised and you don't want to spend more of your hard-earned money replacing components, so a solid warranty can give you the peace of mind knowing your investment is covered.
