5 misconceptions about car care

Not all cars need the same maintenance, much less the same products. All services are best done with the recommendations that the car manufacturer says in the owner's manual.

Maintenance is important for all vehicles, whether your vehicle is new or old. They will help your car run smoothly and last longer.

However, not all techniques, knowledge and intervals are the same for all cars. New cars have new systems that require different maintenance and at different times than some other cars.

So, here are five misconceptions about car maintenance.

First of all, you should know that all the services that your car needs, the recommended time and the recommended product are listed in the owner's manual. So if you have any questions, the best answer will be there.

1.-Change engine oil every 3,000 miles.

An oil change is one of the most important things you need to keep your car running smoothly. Without a proper oil change, engines can become filled with sludge and can damage your engine.

However, the idea that car owners should change oil every 3,000 miles is outdated. Modern developments in engines and oils have significantly increased the life of the oil. Check with your vehicle manufacturer for recommended oil change intervals. 

You may find that they recommend changing the engine oil every 5,000 to 7,500 miles.

2. Batteries do not necessarily last five years.

42% of Americans surveyed believe that a car battery lasts about five years. However, AAA states that five years is the upper limit for the life of a car battery.

If your car battery is three years old or older, have it checked to make sure it's still in good condition. Most auto parts stores offer a free battery check and charge. Therefore, you only need to carry it with you and thus not be left without a battery.

3.- Maintenance must be carried out at the dealer in order not to void the warranty

While basic maintenance and service at the dealer makes it easier to prove that it has been completed in the event of a warranty claim, it is not required.

Therefore, you can take your car to the service where it is most convenient for you. However, it's important to keep track of receipts and service history in case you end up filing a warranty claim.

4.- You must change the brake fluid

Although it's not something that comes to mind when most people think about car maintenance, brake fluid has an expiration date and should be changed at the time recommended by the manufacturer.

5.- When should tires be replaced?

Many believe that tires do not need to be replaced until they reach 2/32 inch tread depth. However, vehicle owners should consider 2/32 as absolute maximum wear and change tires much sooner.

It is very important for vehicle owners to monitor the tread depth of their tires and replace them immediately. Regardless of where the wear strips are, drivers are strongly advised to change their tires to 4/32”.
