Acura bets on electric cars, bypassing hybrids

Acura is ditching hybrid cars, betting big on battery electric vehicles

The automotive industry is undoubtedly undergoing a big transformation, and the noted trend is one of them, which is why it is betting on this type of unit and setting aside its path for hybrid cars.

That's why Acura, the US luxury brand, has set its sights on battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and wants to skip its hybrid vehicle journey.

"We're going to move away from hybrids entirely," said Emil Korkor, Acura's assistant vice president of national sales, in an interview posted on the site.

“So our transition is going very fast to BEV. This is our main goal,” said the head of Acura.

Bet on 60% electric vehicle sales by 2030

Its bid and project is ambitious as Acura estimates EV sales will be 2030% by 60, compared to Honda's 40%.

Thus, Acura wants to lead the transition from conventional cars to battery electric vehicles.

General Motors Ultium platform

If that bet begins to materialize in 2024, as Acura plans to launch its new electric crossover model to be built by General Motors on the Ultium platform following an agreement between the automakers.

The 2022 GMC Hummer EV and 2023 Cadillac Lyriq were also built on this platform.

This shows that automakers are taking steps to electrify their vehicles, with petrol engines still dominating the market and hybrids gaining momentum.

So far, electric vehicles are setting the trend for the world's major automakers.

Electric crossover in 2024

At the same time, Honda also plans to launch an electric crossover in 2024, which will also be built on the Ultium platform.

This electric crossover from Honda will carry the Prologue name and be smaller than its Acura family crossover.

Acura is the luxury brand of the Japanese automaker Honda in the US, Canada and Hong Kong, which has big plans to electrify its cars.

Towards the e platform: Honda architecture

While these electric crossovers from Honda and Acura will be built on GM's Ultium platform, there are plans to move them later to the Japanese firm's own platform called e:Architecture.

In the second half of the decade, Acura and Honda models will begin to be assembled at e:Architecture.

For now, Honda will continue its path to electric vehicles with its hybrid vehicles, Acura is leaving this type of vehicle aside as its priority is PEVs.

Acura says goodbye to hybrids

And he showed it with the launch of MDX 2022, which doesn't have a hybrid version.

Much the same is true of the NSX, a supercar that in its 2022 model year is its latest hybrid version, said John Ikeda, director of Acura, who revealed that the model will have an electric version.
