Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance defeats Toyota! By 35, there will be 2030 new electric vehicles, including the successor to the Nissan Micra.

The next Nissan Micra light car will be all-electric and will be produced in France.

The Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance will bring 35 new electric vehicles to market by the end of the decade, exceeding Toyota's promise of 30 vehicles in the same time frame.

Even though only a few current models from the Alliance brands are emission-free, the French-Japanese conglomerate has worked a way forward where most of these new electric vehicles will be built using just five common platforms.

These platforms are CMF-AEV, KEI-EV, LCV-EV, CMF-EV and CMF-BEV, each with a different size and market segment.

The CMF-AEV architecture will support light vehicles and can target emerging markets as it is based on the Dacia Spring and Renault City K-ZE for the Chinese market. The alliance calls it "the most accessible platform in the world."

According to the Alliance, the KEI-EV platform is for "mini cars" and the "kei" in its name likely alludes to the tiny kei car class popular in Japan.

Similarly, the LCV-EV platform reveals its intent in the name, and this architecture will be used for commercial vans such as the Renault Kangoo and Nissan Townstar.

It is currently unclear whether the platform has room for expansion to larger vehicles such as the Renault Trafic and Master, or vehicles and pickup trucks such as the Nissan Navara, Titan and Mitsubishi Triton.

The CMF-EV platform has actually been used by Nissan and Renault for the Ariya and Megane E-Tech Electric, but by the end of the decade this architecture will be rolled out to at least 13 more models with a target of 1.5 million CMFs. -EV annually.

Finally, the CMF-BEV platform appears to be aimed at passenger cars worldwide and will underpin Renault, Alpine and Nissan vehicles, the first of which will be the R5 from the French brand and the replacement for the Micra from the Japanese brand.

It should be noted that the next Micra model will be produced by Renault and may use the same production line as the R5.

The alliance is targeting a range of 400 km for CMF-BEV vehicles.

To achieve its goals, the Alliance will allocate 23 billion euros (36.43 billion Australian dollars) over the next five years to prepare for new models.

And part of that buildup will include lowering the cost of batteries through economies of scale, but whether that will lower the cost of the Alliance's electric vehicles in the future remains to be seen.

But will these electric cars come to Australia?

It's still too early to tell which models, if any, will make it to the Underground, but as the entire industry shifts towards electric vehicles, it's highly likely that more than a few new models will be on offer.
