Apple and Hyundai may team up to create self-driving electric vehicles

The autonomous electric vehicles that the brands will produce together could be built at Kia's plant in Georgia, USA.

It could become a reality very soon as a Korea IT News report states that entered into a partnership with Apple. The news comes after Hyundai's stock surged 23%, setting off a storm on the Korean Stock Exchange.

President and CEO of Hyundai Motor North America, Jose Munoz, appeared on Bloomberg TV last Tuesday, Jan. 5 to discuss Hyundai's year-end results and plans to move to all-electric vehicles. However, when the brand was asked to make a statement to Korea IT News that they had signed a partnership agreement to start producing autonomous electric vehicles in the US by 2024, they declined to comment.

This would make a lot of sense for both Apple and Hyundai if it were true. Apple has the technological prowess to target Tesla, but it needs a manufacturer with well-established operations to get the car to market quickly.

Apple and Hyundai have been flirting for some time now; the two collaborated to provide their cars. But so far, both companies are behaving modestly. As CNBC reported, just a couple of days ago, Hyundai seemed to be open for dating.

“We are receiving requests for possible cooperation from various companies regarding the development of unmanned electric vehicles, but no decisions have been made, as discussions are at an early stage,” the company said.

The assumption includes a plan for the production of electric vehicles at a plant in Kia Motors in West Point, Georgia, or contribute to the construction of a new plant in the United States, which will produce 100,000 vehicles by 2024.

Apple is known for keeping its partnerships and development plans under wraps, so we may not be aware of the confirmation of this partnership between the tech giant and the automaker, which has been steadily moving forward over the past few years.
