Audi A1 1.4 TFSI (90 kW) Ambition

One of the myriad ways in which cars are promoted is by appearing in films, especially Hollywood films. So that the car appears in front of potential buyers as often as possible and so that PR people have material to write such news as: Daewoo Lanos with a minor role in Terminator. Well, Audi went even further and made their own movie in six sequels starring Justin Timberlack and Dania Ramirez.

Justin drinks coffee well, deals with email on his laptop and is the boss on the other end of the mobile network, after which the desperate girls run to the cafe, and shortly before they are killed by barbarians with rifles, they hit the road together. for new adventures. Of course, with red A1. See for yourself if you're already interested - I gave up after interrupting a YouTube video.

The ad wants to show who the car is for. Namely, if you look at the dimensions (length and price) of the “next big Audi,” you will see that this is not a “budget” car. Since this is an Audi, of course. It is designed for those who can afford something more, but do not need or do not need two-ton city SUVs and five-meter limousines. They want a fun, neat, modern toy that won't have problems with parking (say, it doesn't matter girls), but it will still arouse more admiration and respect, even envy from observers, than if they were brought in, say, with Clio (unless it's RS, but let's leave it for now).

Who or what is the main culprit behind the birth of Enica is clear: the BMW Mini and its success in winning the hearts of upper-middle-wage customers and a bit of a hippie at heart. Mito also belongs to the same class, but Alfa Romeo, judging by the frequency of meetings on the road, did not achieve its intended goals. That A1 would like to oppose Cooper is also evident from their advertising slogan, which they frankly smell of retro style. So what is packed into a vehicle that is just under four meters long with a 100-year technological edge?

The exterior is unmistakably Audi-like, but it's not painted so "ziheraško" - it won't necessarily appeal to those who are in awe of the shape of other cars (A3 to A8) with 2/3 Olympic laps on the hood. Up front, of course, there are aggressively edgy taillights and a large air intake, but then the sideline rises back a little and, together with the big tracks, a small spoiler above the rear window and a black underside, the slightly raised rear wing gives it a sporty look. Because the A1 is still a four-seater, it must have a large enough window behind the B-pillar to allow a rear-seat passenger to see out of the car. Joints between sheet metal and rubber seals are made with excellent precision.

When the driver's seat is in the lowest position, he sits in the car like in a sports coupe. The upholstered seat is custom made and is firm (but not too hard) and has ample lateral grip. Mechanically adjustable, in addition to the standard movements, it allows you to adjust the lumbar support and, of course, the height of the seat - just like the passenger seat. When shifting forward, accessing the rear seat isn't all that difficult, the only thing that bothers you is that the driver's seat doesn't stay alone in this position, but leans back. Don't expect a lot of room on the back bench, but it can accommodate two adults.

More knee room (as long as the front passenger seat is moved far enough), height is problematic as a passenger over 180 centimeters tall will be leaning on the roof (with padding) instead of a pillow. There is no feeling of tightness in front, despite the small dimensions, since the door is strongly “recessed” from the inside in the elbow area, so that there is enough space for the hands. The steering wheel is height and depth adjustable - the latter could be a little more for those who like racing close to the body.

The three doors, of course, have their drawbacks: it is harder to close and tighten heavily behind the seat belt on the left shoulder. The view from the car is good, and the side view is not very difficult due to the C-pillar. The center mirror is smaller than we are used to, but since the rear window is also small and there are no things that would limit the view to the rear (such as the third brake light), it cannot be blamed.

The material of the entire upper part of the instrument panel is soft, only the cases of round deflectors with a rotating central part glow with metal. In the middle is a screen that can be manually hidden if you're worried about too much information in front of you, and the center console is tilted slightly towards the driver. Cooling and heating are controlled in the classic way using three rotary knobs (power and direction of blowing, temperature), the rest of the switches are very clearly located, the only exception is the rotary knob in the "wrong" direction to select radio stations or songs from the list. The CD player (it reads mp3 format, of course) because when rotated clockwise, the selection moves up - just the opposite of what we're used to.

Typically, with analog counters, large red backlit gauges display engine speed and RPM, including a large monochrome digital screen that can display trip computer information, a phone book (if a phone is connected through a blue tooth), and a list of saved radio stations. The 'efficiency program' (in this case, in addition to the current and average consumption, the consumption of conditioned air is also graphically displayed in liters per hour) or the so-called 'easy wiew', which shows only the selected gear and outside temperature.

It is worth mentioning the automatic storage of messages on the radio (it happens that something is heard at the first listening), which was the reason for the timely warning of a standing Gorenzskoye highway in early October. It all works together, simple, useful, and it's hard to miss once you get used to all the features.

The car is still (hello, wouldn't Justin prefer a smart card?) unlocked with the classic remote control (unlock, lock and open the trunk separately), even the ignition lock still works on the same principle as in Fičko – Start the engine buttons so that it is not somewhere behind the wheel. The 1-litre engine is very quiet and quiet, it fires well (it has a switchable start and stop system) and, thanks to the usefulness of the turbocharger, it delivers very well-distributed power across the board.

From the power of 90 kilowatts it does not take your breath away, but for such a large machine this is enough. When I switched to a 1-liter turbodiesel during testing, I immediately thought that I could easily forgive him a liter or two (or maybe three) more consumption: on the highway 8 miles per hour in seventh gear and at about 130 rpm it drinks about 2.500 , 5, and at 5 km / h already three liters more. The test average ranged from six to 150 liters between measurements and engine and chassis limit checks. Unlike turbodiesels, fuel consumption is very different, from completely economical to wasteful - depending on the requirements of the driver.

The seven-speed S-Tronic transmission with two automatic shift modes, D and S, further contributes to comfort and driving pleasure. D stands for classic (driving mode) and selects low rpm (about 2.500 per minute) when you carefully touch the accelerator pedal. the pedal, however, when the right leg is fully extended, the crankshaft rotates six thousandths - as in the sports program. "S" is not suitable for normal driving, because, with the exception of first gear, when it shifts below three thousandths, it insists on speeds up to four thousand rpm, which is especially annoying when driving around the city.

This is useful for fast cornering while maintaining a high enough rotational speed to start up to the next corner, even while cornering. It can also be shifted using the shift lever, or by using fairly small (about three fingers thick) steering wheel lugs (right up, left down) that rotate with the ring. It should be added that the selected program does not affect the operation of the cruise control - so if, after crossing the toll station (again - why do we already have them ?!) re-enable acceleration to the previously set speed, the speed will be the same regardless of the selected program.

The sports chassis that comes standard with the Ambition matches the mid-range choice between comfort and sportiness, but since the test car had additional 17-inch wheels, the scale shifted towards sportiness. Well, the A1 is not a go-kart, but the foundation for the S1 seems to be very good. A car for these dimensions has good directional stability, is not sensitive to the wheels, but more interferes with irregularities (or passengers in it).

A good testing ground is the old road through Djeprka, and on such and similar ones, expect a pleasant jump of melons stuck in the blouse in the passenger seat. That's why the A1 is good in corners, because the tires stick and hold, and even when they give way, the (switchable) electronics make sure the wheels follow the designated direction. The steering wheel could have been even more direct for such antics, but as said - the base for the S1 is good, and this A1 is a real little Audi for the big guys. We vote for the color red with a gray belt over the windows.

Face to face: Tomaž Porekar

Anyone interested in A1 has three things to consider. The little three-door is very attractive and I haven't heard anyone say he doesn't like it. But if you choose it, you should definitely take into account the long list of different equipment that you cannot buy with any other such small machine. In fact, there are some things on it that an ordinary buyer in A1 does not even dream of.

Actually this is the third reason to buy. Audi is just a prestige brand, and whoever decides on it, of course, must afford something more.

Overall rating (338/420)

  • A fashionable product, supported by high-quality technologies, would receive a fifth according to various criteria, but, unfortunately, our table has a “economy” field, where it lost quite a lot of points due to the high price.

  • Exterior (12/15)

Small and sexy, well done. The door needs to be slammed more boldly.

  • Interior (99/140)

The ergonomics are good, the materials are also good, the comfort is worse only on the back of the bench. Since we tested it in the fall, it is difficult to gauge heating and cooling, but we doubt Audi will "fail" here.

  • Engine, transmission (59

    / 40)

Adrenaline seekers will have to wait for the S1, but below the line, the movement technique is excellent.

  • Driving performance (61

    / 95)

Sports drivers will want an even straighter steering wheel. This is very good on twisty roads, less comfortable on bad trails.

  • Performance (28/35)

Acceleration in nine seconds to hundreds per hour is not a reason to celebrate, but hey - 122 “horses” is not a miracle.

  • Security (39/45)

Standard equipment includes six airbags and ESP, fog lights, xenon headlights and a rain and light sensor, adjustable high beam and a tire pressure monitoring system are among the optional extras.

  • Economy

It is not cheap, fuel consumption is acceptable during normal driving. Loss of value and warranty conditions also benefit the driver.
