Two words: nine seconds! So much time has passed that the electric and hydraulic roof with hidden zzz is stored behind the rear seats or above the trunk. Nine seconds later, behind the seats is a beautiful "remnant" of this roof, not a metal protrusion or crumpled fabric.

While I don't think it makes sense to discuss the promised bread, it is still true, at least for the time being: all Audi convertibles, including this A3, have a tarpaulin roof. One of the two parts of the jury argues that this is the only way a car can become a real convertible.

Let it be so. But others are also loud due to technology: a hard roof should better muffle all kinds of noise. Audi's answer to this is simple: even the roof for the A3 Cabriolet is an excellent sound deadener; according to them, the A3 Cabriolet is only one decibel louder than the A3 sedan, at 140 kilometers per hour, which is really familiar in practice.

Only at speeds of over 160 kilometers per hour, the gusts of wind seem louder than we are used to with classic cars.

The marquise of the Audi A3 is without a doubt the best product of its kind so far in terms of design and mechanics; only the roof of the Mazda MX-5 comes close to it, but only covers two seats. However, the appearance does not suffer; Both with a connected and an open roof, this A3 looks neat. Beautiful? Let everyone judge for himself.

Convertibles or their "windmills" have not been judged by their roof for a long time - since someone invented the wind net.

Audi's aerodynamics have done a good job here too: while it is tuned, it effectively protects against the swirl of air in the back of the head of the front passengers, and setting (and cleaning) the entire mechanism is simple and intuitive. And the whole structure is light enough, so installation (and cleaning) does not pose a problem even for the gentle hands of women, whom we see in our editorial office as typical users of this car.

We're just waiting for someone to perfect this kind of assistance so much that two passengers can sit in the rear seats, even with a net; even in the A3 convertible, this is not possible.

However, everything else that follows from the "windmill" of this Audi, primarily serves the appearance. Because the roof needs to be stored somewhere (and that doesn't require very little space), the already small trunk is even smaller.

The boot lid is also small, but very small: it is very low and even shorter. Therefore, access to the trunk (260 liters), which becomes even smaller if you store an otherwise pretty bag with windshield, is inconvenient and inconvenient.

Even the fact that this trunk can be pushed halfway up to the rear seats (up to 674 liters) and with a very good mechanism (which has no locking!), In practice, does not improve the overall impression. At least young mothers with strollers drop out of the list of possible drivers.

It is clear that this is all difficult to obtain at once. However, the A3 Cabriolet is there for everything else (with the exception of the slightly redesigned nose and other taillights with finished striped marker lights), which is good news for Audi fans at least. Overall, the interior gives a sense of high quality (materials, design and workmanship) and prestige.

It can get a little stuck in shape, as it mixes round, angular, rounded and some other elements, which seems quite contradictory. But again: let everyone judge for himself.

Audi also has a genetic design for the driver's seat: the steering wheel (which is great for traction) is comfortably upright, the driver can sit very low, the gear lever falls into the hand, the accelerator pedal and the left footrest are excellent. The large difference in height between the accelerator and brake pedals may be somewhat troubling, and the clutch pedal travel is still a little (too) long.

Sitting in the rear seats is a little uncomfortable due to only two doors on the sides and a low roof, but the mechanism for deflecting the backrest and moving the seat is excellent, including the memory of the seat position.

On the positive side are also the sensors along with the trip computer (which is probably still one of the best at the moment) and the ergonomics of driving, and among the worst is that the A3 has very few useful drawers and storage spaces. it has no room for a small bottle, which (at least on the test car) has no steering for the audio system (and cruise control), that setting the desired temperature inside depends on the appearance, not usability, which on (hard !) there are no pockets in the rear seats and that (at least in the test car) some kind of noise is constantly heard in the upper right part of the windshield frame, as if someone forgot a screwdriver when installing there.

While this may be justified by the cumbersome setup, it certainly does not deserve respect.

Fortunately, there are three more engines on the price list of such an Audi, all better than the one that drove the test A3 Cabriolet. In principle, the possibility of such a choice is commendable, since there is certainly a type of customer who does not have great opportunities.

This engine accelerates very well from low revs, to about 100 kilometers per hour, it is very flexible and sovereign, and with a little patience, the A3 C is also fast with it. Best of all, it can use very little fuel if the driver is careful with the accelerator pedal.

What else can he do? above 140 km / h, very poor maneuverability, he also does not like to spin (until the beginning of the red field at 4.600 rpm, the tachometer needle barely moves), and for the speedometer needle to touch the number 200, the driver must be a little lucky, drive at least a little downhill and have at least a little wind in the back.

All this, of course, is a matter of personal wishes and requirements. With the engine, however, anyone looking for an Audi image will certainly be disturbed by the roar and vibrations, which are all the more palpable because this is a convertible.

According to the standards written by modern turbodiesels, nothing pumps well, and even more respectfully declares that this is a turbodiesel. Depending on the age (design), the slogan Audi Vorsprung durch Technik (advances in technology) can be converted to Rücksprung durch (alte Technik).

The rest of the technology is very good: the steering mechanism is precise and simple, the gearbox is well designed, and its lever has short and precise movements, the chassis (and with it the position on the road) is comfortable and reliable, and the brakes feel very well the dosage of the braking force on pedals.

In general, nothing special, but in the mentioned combination, the starting point for an easy, comfortable, safe and enjoyable ride. With or without a roof.

It is rather surprising that such an A3 convertible, with the exception of the Enka Beemve, has no real competitor from a technical and price point of view, and the southern Bavarians do not offer Enka with such a weak car. So the A3, like all other canvas-top convertibles, grossly outperforms it with a canvas roof. And allegedly - according to rather loud rumors - with the appearance in general. But there has always been a big difference between Audi and Beemvee.

Yes, it's beautiful. Yes, it's helpful. And the wind in her hair is correct. But in general, this will not help him at all, because you will still hear the hum of a pre-submersible diesel engine all the time.

I confess I don't understand how a brand like Audi would even consider putting this engine into a car like this? Have they completely lost the idea of ​​what is right and what is wrong? It's an engine that doesn't belong to much less prestigious brands (not Skoda and Seate, let alone VW), but it's still being used hard. And the fools stubbornly buy it.

This is really the cheapest A3 Cabrio (if we mean the basic equipment), but if we already buy a car worth 30 thousand euros, we do not look at every euro? at least that's how it seems to me. I would definitely choose a different engine as I find the 1.9 TDI completely unsuitable.

I don't understand how Ingolstadt even allowed this roaring engine to be a very enjoyable convertible, which, if there are a few thousand more, has a very serious (and in fact the only) competitor to BMW Enka. Cabriolet.

If you've already decided to buy a car like this, an acoustically insulated convertible roof should almost always be on the accessory list. This is definitely one of the best awnings on the market right now. As a representative of tall drivers, I can say that there is enough space inside.

Your head will not look over the edge of the roof, and your legs will be nicely extended towards the pedals. I'm not going to talk a lot about the engine. And not because there is nothing to criticize, but because colleagues from the editorial board have already said everything.
