Audi A8 2.8 FSI Multitronic

True, they are also more economical and cleaner from generation to generation. Yes, a modern (say) five-liter eight-cylinder engine can be as fuel efficient and clean as the average two-liter engine of 15-20 years ago, but a serious downward trend in volume (and, of course, performance) due to consumption and emissions has not yet been detected. Audi A8 with a 2-liter petrol six-cylinder engine is one of the first.

At 2 liters and six cylinders, of course, there would be nothing special if the engineers of Ingolstadt backed it all up with, say, a turbocharger or two, but the 8 FSI is a classic naturally aspirated gasoline engine with direct injection technology.

For a car this big, 210 horsepower doesn't mean much on paper, but it might be enough on today's fast-paced (and increasingly controlled) roads, where a lot of sheet metal keeps you from going fast anyway. 238 kilometers per hour and a good eight seconds to 100 kilometers per hour is still more than most cars on our roads can do.

And the consumption, which can fluctuate on average (here it is very important, whether it is mainly city driving, fast highways or calm relative kilometers) from 11 to 13 liters per 100 kilometers, is in any case favorable for so many (and rich). equipped) limousine with a gasoline engine.

Of course, it's also so affordable because this A8 doesn't have Quattro all-wheel drive, which is also its biggest drawback, so much so it's almost worth asking if it's worth buying such an A8. 210 "horses" do not sell asphalt, but is it enough that on a slightly slippery (especially on wet) road you have to intervene a lot of ESP? The driver also perceives this as a jolt from the steering wheel.

Large limousine manufacturers, whether German or Japanese (or English if you will), have long known that a large and prestigious car only includes rear-wheel drive (or all four wheels), as that is the only way to ensure a smooth ride. riding. when accelerating on slippery surfaces, especially when the front wheels are not turned straight.

This A8 is driven from the front. True, the Quattro would mean a little more consumption and higher emissions, but only with it the A8 really is the A8. An even bigger disadvantage: you can't pay extra for this either. Hi Audi? ? ?

The transmission of power to the wheels is taken care of by the continuously variable multitronic transmission, which is more than adequate for its task, with the exception of a slight jolt immediately after starting the engine.

Outwardly, this A8 (perhaps with an inscription on the back, but you can order a car without it) does not seem to be the weakest in the family. And yet it is a very attractive car.

Last year's update brought a new radiator grille (now a family trapezoidal one) and new fog lights (now rectangular in shape), side turn signals have moved from the side of the car to the outside rearview mirrors (of course, LED technology is used), and LED lights are also used in the taillights. ...

Inside, the seats remain comfortable (only the steering wheel is slightly moved apart). There is also an excellent MMI system for controlling all of the car's functions, and the sensors have been slightly modified to get a new, larger multi-color LCD screen that also displays data from the navigation device (which now also has a map of Slovenia).

There is plenty of room in the back as well, and the fact remains that the A8 is not cheap and that a long list of accessories can also lead to a correspondingly large amount under the line.

But prestige and comfort always come at a price, and this A8 with the weakest engine (aside from Quattro history) remains a true A8 that will give its driver as much pleasure as a model with (say) a three-cylinder engine. liter diesel or and 4-liter eight-cylinder.

The drivers of the A8 2.8 FSI will be people for whom comfort and a sense of prestige mean more than performance and handling. However, this A8 is also excellent here.

evaluation

  • For those who are more interested in consumption, emissions and price than performance, this A8 is a great alternative. Only on slippery roads will you remember which A8 you are driving on.
