Audi recalls more than 26,000 vehicles due to turbocharger lubrication problems

The recall affects 26,000 Audi A8, RS7, S6, S7 and S8 2013–2017 vehicles. The automaker will notify owners and make repairs free of charge.

A problem with the turbocharger lubrication system, which can lead to drivability problems, has forced Audi to recall more than 26,000 of its S and RS models.

Which vehicle models are affected by the recall?

This issue also damages turbochargers and even big problems if not corrected. The recall will affect the 8-7 Audi A6, RS7, S8, S2013 and S2017 models.

This malfunction is related to the strain relief located in the oil supply system to the turbines. The mesh is fine enough to clog due to the buildup of deposits or soot in the oil, reducing oil flow to the turbine bearings and increasing wear. As the bearings wear, the play in the turbocharger shaft can increase, which can lead to contact between the turbine and the housing or failure of the shaft itself.

"Defect in turbochargers and the boost pressure system can cause various warning messages such as EPC, MIL or oil warning light to be displayed," says Audi's defect report to NHTSA. “In addition, the customer may notice signs such as a long start, rough idle, or lack of power.”

What is the remedy for this problem?

The way out seems simple: a new screen with larger perforations. Audi says cars built after March 30, 2017 already came with the updated screen.

If you're not sure if your vehicle was built before or after this date, you can enter your VIN into the NHTSA recall database to find out. If you're not in a hurry, Audi will notify customers no later than May 20th.
