Test drive Audi Q7 4,2 TDI: Long live the king!

It's time for the king of torque, His Majesty the 4,2-liter V8 TDI, to ride his thoroughbred Q7 stallion. With full combat gear and 760 Nm, the two set off on a campaign into uncharted territory.

Meanwhile, even the impressive size of Q7 is not enough to attract the attention of passers-by on the street. The SUV model Audi has been on the market for more than a year and has already become familiar to automotive life. The only thing that could bring it back into the limelight is the new 4,2-litre eight-cylinder diesel engine, which, with its 760 Nm, currently tops the list for maximum torque in the SUV segment. The device even pockets even the Touareg's five-litre V10 TDI engine developing 750 Nm.

Of course, the public's expectations of this combination of thrust and dead weight are high. In fact, unlike the emerging Q7 4,2 TDI's most worthy competitor, the Mercedes GL 420 CDI (700 Nm), which is more in line with the American relaxed driving style, the Audi product is tuned entirely in European style. This gives the driver and passengers a real sense of dynamism... However, as far as possible, in the class of the largest and heaviest SUVs.

Powerful diesel V8

A few kilometers after the start, the V8 TDI eight-cylinder convinces us to turn the search for weak points in the car to other areas. With no lag or noticeable turbo hole, the unit converts commands into monstrous acceleration, and the crankshaft delivers maximum torque at 1800 rpm. Common Rail technology using piezo crystals makes the Q7 4,2 TDI the most powerful production diesel SUV in the world.

Reaching 3800 rpm, the engine uses all its power, and the dual drive and optional 19-inch wheels prevent a single gram of slipping. However, if the accelerator pedal is handled carelessly, there is a danger of falling into the "private space" of the vehicle in front.

Bad vibration

The engine runs smoothly and smoothly and leaves the subjective feel of at least a seven-liter gasoline engine. Different driving habits do not change the noise level and even at high speeds the sound of air masses does not penetrate into the cabin. Air resistance only stops the Q7 from accelerating at 236 km / h.

Fuel consumption of 12,5 l/100 km is respectable for a machine of this size and again stands out from the competition (GL 420 CDI burns 13,6 l/100 km).

Evaluation

Audi TDI Q7

Diesel V8 Q7 boasts delightfully smooth operation and monstrous power reserves. In addition, the Q7 is once again endearing for its traditional qualities such as spacious interior and solid workmanship. However, starting the car too abruptly takes a period of getting used to.
