Audi RS6, four generations of the superfamily – Sports Cars

The Germans will never change: the race to see who puts the most horsepower under the hood of their supersedans and family members is the story of a lifetime. It all started with motorsport, an environment that keeps the passion for sports cars alive and allows for the development of the technologies we see in road cars; but that war ended inexorably, with the poisoning of road cars as well.

I was not so impressed when Audi managed to break the 6 hp barrier with the new RS 600 Performance. and 300 km / h on a station wagon. There is no faster way to move Ikea furniture, your dog and your entire family from A to B.

Prima series

I still remember the first RS 6 in 2002 doing better times than the 911 in a test on the track; impressive. It was produced from 2002 to 2004, also in a sedan version, and was one of my favorite cars in Gran Turismo 4 for the Play Station.

Its 8-cylinder V4,2 twin-turbo engine (the current 4.0-liter, also twin-turbo) produced 450 hp. in the range from 6.000 to 6.400 rpm and a maximum torque of 560 Nm in the range from 1950 to 5600 rpm.

Acceleration from 0 to 100 km / h in 4,7 seconds (version 4,9 for the Avant) is already impressive, imagine a station in 2002. However, the top speed was limited to 250 km / h.

The Plus version was also created for the Avant version, equipped with an increased output of 30 hp, with a total output of 480 hp. and 560 Nm of torque. Plus was also equipped with Dynamic Ride Control, a system that controls the suspension to improve the car's handling.

Only 999 copies of the first series were produced, all with identification marks, and this is a great rarity.

second series

The second RS6 series was born in 2008 and remains the most incredible in some ways; thanks to the historical period when such a number of cylinders and pollution of the environment were a matter of pride. The line of the second series is more rounded, massive and pompous; Matches perfectly with what is hiding under the hood.

The Series 2 is powered by a 10-liter 5,0-cylinder twin-turbo V-twin sourced from the Lamborghini Gallardo and delivers a maximum power of 580 hp. in the range from 6.250 to 6.700 rpm, and the maximum torque is 650 Nm in the range from 1.500 to 6.500 rpm. 0-100 km / h can be overcome in 4,4 seconds and the top speed is limited to 250 km / h, but on request, together with a carbon engine cover, unlocking can be obtained up to 280 km / h.

Third series (ongoing)

The third series entered production in 2013 - in the middle of a downsizing period - and thus lost two cylinders (the competing BMW M5 also switched from 10 to 8 cylinders).

It is based on an 8-liter V4,0 with two twin-scroll turbochargers, capable of developing 560 hp. (between 5700 and 6600 rpm) and 700 Nm of torque (between 1750 and 5500 rpm).

Despite having two fewer pistons, the third series is faster than the previous one thanks to its 100 kg lighter weight. Acceleration from 0 to 100 km / h accelerates in just 3,9 seconds. Like a good, environmentally friendly car, the RS 6 also features a device that turns off four of its eight cylinders when not needed to limit fuel consumption and emissions.

With news of an optional performance package that boosts power to 605bhp. and a maximum torque of up to 750 Nm, I am pleased to note that Audi is not going to give up the race for power with its historical competitors. Under whose turn it is.
