USA Auto Auctions Online - Manheim, IaaI, Copart

The US automotive market has long held a leading position. In recent years, it has yielded to the Chinese - according to statistics for 2013, about 23 million cars were sold in China, and 15-16 million in the USA. However, if you consider that China has almost 2 billion people, and the United States - 320 million, then this difference is almost imperceptible. In addition, Americans prefer good cars - almost all well-known automakers are aimed at the American market.

According to statistics, an American changes a car once every 3-5 years; accordingly, a huge number of practically new cars accumulate in the country that need to be sold somewhere. A variety of Trade-In salons cope with this task, there are also a lot of auctions - almost every city has its own trading floor, and in big cities there can be several of them. All of them are united in general auto auction networks: Manheim, Copart, Adesa and others.

Why is it profitable to buy used cars in America?

We have already written on Vodi.su why it is profitable to buy cars from Germany, Lithuania or at Japanese car auctions. But after all, America is overseas - what is the benefit of buying a car, the delivery of which to Russia can cost almost the same as the car itself?

It is clear that the quality of such a vehicle will be very high - Americans are not poor people, therefore they do not skimp on various additional options, in addition, any automaker supplies cars to the United States in a configuration in which you are unlikely to find a similar model in domestic car dealerships.

But buyers are attracted by cheapness - go to Mobile.de (the largest site in Germany for the sale of used cars) and at the same time go to Cars.com and type in the search, for example, a Volkswagen Passat manufactured no earlier than 2010. The price difference will pleasantly surprise you. And on both sites you will see a lot of different modifications. True, the most expensive copies on the German site will cost about 21-22 thousand euros, and in the USA - 15-16 thousand dollars.

Do not forget also that the cost of transportation and customs duties must be added to this cost. But all the same, prices at American auctions are really lower.

There is one more trick - newer cars are also sold at American auctions, which have been out for no more than 1,5-2 years. True, these cars were rented or leased at rental agencies, that is, they have a rather high mileage - much more than 60-80 thousand km (this is exactly the average mileage of cars that are put up at auctions). But the prices for rental cars will be even lower.

There is no need to write about good American roads and quality service - this is already clear. A car with a mileage of 50 thousand on American roads is practically new.

manheim

Manheim is the largest and oldest network of auctions - not only in America, but all over the world - uniting 124 sites from all over the country. Up to 50 thousand units are usually traded here per day, both new and used and Salvage (not on the move, after an accident, for spare parts). Only registered dealers have access to the auction.

There is also an opportunity to participate in the auctions held in Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Turkey, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Great Britain, France.

Registration on Manheim is open to everyone.

You need:

  • fill out the form (indicate all the information about yourself in it: address, postal code, phone number);
  • confirm your e-mail;
  • you will receive a contract by e-mail, you need to print it, sign it and send it to the specified address (there are also official representatives of Manheim in Russia);
  • you will get access to trading for 6 months and your personal account;
  • The subscription costs $50 for six months.

The bidding process itself takes place as usual - next to any model, the start date of bidding is indicated, you can place your bid (Bid) in advance, and monitor sales online by raising the bid. The step of the bet is usually 50-100 dollars. For many cars, the price is initially indicated, while some are first set at zero cost.

If you managed to win the auction, then in addition to the cost of the car itself, you must pay a commission fee (Fee).

The minimum commission is $125. It can increase depending on the price of the car up to 565 USD.

The issue of delivery can be resolved here on the site - in the Transpotation section, select Exporttrader.com. In the window that appears, enter the port of departure, for example, New Jersey and the port of delivery St. Petersburg.

Container delivery of one car will cost $1150.

It should also be noted that in Russia there are a large number of intermediary companies that work with Manheim, there are dealers offering their services in the US itself. In principle, this method is also good, since they will completely solve all issues, including transportation, cargo insurance and customs clearance. True, their services will cost you 500-800 dollars.

copart

Auction Copart specializes in the sale of retired vehicles. If you see the inscription “Salvage” near the lot, it means that it is not on the move. The main sellers are repair shops, insurance companies, rental shops.

Copart Rule of thumb:

  • All vehicles are sold "as is".

That is, the administration does not bear any responsibility for the condition and history of the car, since it is decommissioned. On these sites, and there are about 127 of them, they mainly buy vehicles for cutting and for auto dismantling.

You can register on the auto auction site for free, to participate in the auction you need to pay a subscription - $ 200. And after buying a vehicle, you need to pay a commission - from $ 300.

IAA

IAAI, like Copart, specializes in damaged vehicles. If you go to the company's website - www.iaai.com - you can see very normal cars with small dents. The description of the car contains the nature of the damage, as well as the cost of repairs. It is clear that these cars are much cheaper.

For example, we found a Chrysler 300, manufactured in 2008, with a mileage of just over 100 km. All damage consisted of a small dent in the front and rear doors on the left side. The current price before the auction is 7200 USD.

It also sells looted cars from which thieves have removed spare parts, wheels, doors, and so on. The price is also very low.

Anyone can register on the site, the entrance fee is 200 USD.

Cars.com and Yahoo! Autos

These sites cooperate with each other, on Yahoo! you can find many propositions from Kars.com. In principle, these are not auctions, but ordinary bulletin boards, since bidding is conducted here only if several people apply for one car.

Registration is available to every Internet user.

Even unregistered users can view all offers. About 7-10 million of them are exhibited monthly. Near each car, the dealer's details are indicated, and you can contact him and discuss payment and delivery issues.

Ebay.com и autotrader.com also built on the same principle.

Experts advise to be very careful on such sites, because here you can simply be scammed for money - the trader's people can deliberately stir up a stir by raising the price. There are also cases where sellers have disappeared with customers' money.

adessa

Adesa is a relatively new auction house that operates in both the US and Canada. Specializes in all cars - new, used, decommissioned. It is a serious competitor for Manheim, many traders even switch from Manheim to Adesa. Works in the same way.

We have described only a part of the auctions, but in reality there are many more sites, so buying a car in the USA today is not a problem - there would be money.

Video review of one of the largest American car auctions - Manheim. It will be useful for those who want to understand how everything works there.
