In 1998, GM introduced a 5-speed automatic to replace the 4-speed 4L30-E. By design, this is a conventional hydromechanical automatic transmission that is built around the Ravigno gearbox and is intended for rear and all-wheel drive cars with a longitudinal engine. This box holds torque up to 340 Nm, and its enhanced version 5L50 up to 422 Nm. There was also a four-stage modification of this machine under the symbol 4L40E.

Another weak point of this family of machines is the torque converter. With active driving, critical wear of the friction clutch occurs even at a mileage of 80 km, which often results in vibrations, wear of its bushing and strong lubrication leaks.
With a rare oil change, the valve body quickly becomes clogged with wear products from the friction clutch and strong shocks, jerks and twitches immediately appear when shifting gears. With a bulkhead, wear of valves, bushings and springs in hydraulic accumulators is often found.
This box adopts a high performance vane type oil pump, which can't stand dirty oil as well as long-term high speed driving. Such an oil pump can quickly wear out and then shocks will appear when switching.
The manufacturer claims a 5L40 gearbox resource of 200 thousand km, but it easily runs 300 km.
