Automatic Renault MB1
Content
The Renault MB3 1-speed automatic transmission was produced from 1981 to 2000 and was installed on such company models as Renault 5, 11, 19, Clio and Twingo. This transmission is designed for power units with 130 Nm of torque.
The 3-automatic transmission family also includes: MB3 and MJ3.
Design features of automatic transmission Renault MB1
An automatic transmission with three forward gears and one reverse gear forms a single unit with the main gear and electronically controlled differential. The oil pump is driven by the engine crankshaft through a torque converter and supplies pressurized oil to the gearbox, where it is used as a lubricant and to control actuators.
The selector lever can be set to one of six positions:
- P - parking
- R - reverse
- N - neutral position
- D - moving forward
- 2 - only the first two gears
- 1 - first gear only
The engine can only be started in selector lever positions P and N.
Operation, reviews and transmission resource Renault MB1
The automatic transmission is more often scolded than praised. Drivers do not like her thoughtfulness and sluggishness, capriciousness and low reliability. And most importantly, it is the lack of qualified service. Masters who undertake the repair of such a transmission are very difficult to find. There are also problems with spare parts.
In total, four and a half liters of transmission fluid are poured into the automatic transmission. Replacement is carried out by the method of partial replacement every 50 thousand km. To do this, you need 2 liters of ELF Renaultmatic D2 or Mobil ATF 220 D.
The resource of this box is estimated by servicemen at 100 - 150 thousand kilometers, and it is unlikely that anyone will be able to run so much without a single repair.

The most common malfunctions of the MB1 machine
Any malfunction of the solenoid valves of the hydraulic distributor puts the automatic transmission into emergency mode.
Most often, owners are concerned about transmission fluid leaks. Usually oil oozes at the junction of the motor and automatic transmission.
Low oil level or loss of pressure due to valve failure will burn out the friction discs.
A weak valve body fails even on a run of up to 100 thousand km. Symptoms are jerking, twitching and failure of some gears.
