The ZF 5HP5 19-speed automatic transmission was produced in Germany from 1994 to 2008 and was installed on many popular rear-wheel drive BMW models under the A5S325Z index. On Audi and Volkswagen models, this gearbox is known as 5HP19FL or 01V, and on Porsche as 5HP19HL.
The 5HP family also includes automatic transmissions: 5HP18, 5HP24 and 5HP30.

In 1994, the German concern ZF introduced an updated version of the 5HP5 18-speed automatic transmission and, moreover, in three different versions with quite significant structural differences: the 5HP19 box was intended for rear-wheel drive BMW models with V6 units up to 300 Nm, the 5HP19FL or 5HP19FLA automatic transmissions were installed on front and all-wheel drive vehicles under the brand Audi, Volkswagen and Skoda with engines up to W8 with a torque of 370 Nm and finally 5HP19HL or 5HP19HLA for rear-wheel drive Porsches with V6 engines up to 3.6 liters.
By its design, this is a classic automatic machine with a Ravigno double planetary gearbox, a valve body for 7 or 8 solenoids and a torque converter lock-up from third gear. Also in this box there is a function of manual selection of Tiptronic or Steptronic gears and the ability to adapt the transmission to the driving style of its specific owner.

Disadvantages, breakdowns and problems of the 5HP19 box
In this machine, the torque converter can be blocked starting from third gear, and with aggressive driving, its clutch wears out very quickly, clogging the lubricant. Dirty oil reduces the life of the solenoids, especially the main pressure regulator.
Strong wear of the torque converter lock-up clutch leads to shaft vibration, which breaks and then completely rotates the oil pump hub bearing. Also on the modification for Audi, the oil pump cover with gears does not last long.
In terms of hardware, the machine is considered quite reliable, but for overly active owners who operate their car without warming up, a double caliper drum may burst. Also, in automatic transmissions until 1998, the Overdrive clutch drum bushing often wore out.
The weak points of the transmission include a not very reliable selector position sensor, short-lived rubber parts: sealing tubes, axle shaft and pump oil seals, and on BMW modifications, it often cuts the teeth of the pump stator plastic tube.
The manufacturer declared a 5HP19 gearbox resource of 200 km, but this machine also runs 000 km.
