Preparing your car for the new season involves changing your tires to summer tires and performing an inspection, cleaning, and possible maintenance of the air conditioning system. Although the need to change tires is no longer discussed, regular maintenance of the air conditioning system is not so obvious.
Better to prevent than to cure
Regular maintenance of the air conditioning system is not only about the comfort and safety of driving at high temperatures, but above all, taking care of your health. Pathogenic bacteria, molds and fungi develop on the elements of the system. “Usually we come to the service when the air conditioning system is not working, it is not working efficiently, or when the cooling is turned on, there is a very unpleasant smell of mold and mustiness. All of the above symptoms prove that, unfortunately, we contacted the air conditioning service too late, explains Krzysztof Wyszynski, Würth Polska. This means that the moment when it was necessary to disinfect the air conditioning system and replace the cabin filter has long passed. Therefore, it is very important to carry out these activities systematically. Such a procedure should be carried out at least once, and in the case of cars operated mainly in the city, even twice a year. Allergy sufferers should also take care of more frequent cleaning of the air conditioner and replacement of the cabin filter. Mold and fungus are highly allergenic.

– Drivers who own a car with air conditioning should remember to check the air conditioning system for leaks and coolant levels every 2-3 years. If necessary, add/replace the said refrigerant together with the appropriate PAG oil. At the moment, all these actions are carried out by automated diagnostic and air conditioning stations, explains Krzysztof Wyszyński. Unfortunately, such devices are not capable of signaling small leaks that do not cause large enough pressure changes during the tests. To check, a luminescent substance should be added during the “breaking through the air conditioner”. Then you can see all the leaks, because after driving about 1000 km with the air conditioner on, they will be very clearly visible in the form of iridescent stains in the light of an ultraviolet lamp. It can then be decided whether an appropriate repair should be made so that a serious breakdown does not occur in a short time, or whether it is a leak that can still be refrained from repairing. Such a test is associated with a repeated visit to the site, while the profit in the form of saved money and nerves definitely compensates for the time spent.
