Tesla Autopilot: Radar systems will be excluded for its operation and only the camera system will be used.

Due to the high cost of installing radars in their cars, Tesla decided to do without them and put in their place a new system called Tesla Vision, which works through video cameras, although not as secure as radars.

Tesla's Autopilot Feature Currently Uses Radar

Tesla's semi-automatic driving feature, known as and measuring the time it takes to bounce off objects and come back.

Tesla's semi-automatic vehicles will now operate using a camera-based system called Tesla Vision. Tesla Vision will use network-neutral processing to allow the 3 Model 2021 and 2021 Model Y to maintain safety in semi-autonomous driving. This new monitoring system will allow Tesla to use features like lane keeping assist and cruise control without the help of radar.

Will camera-based systems work as well as radar sensors?

This remains to be seen. Most automakers producing semi-autonomous vehicles use radar and lidar in addition to cameras. Lidar sensors work by sending out pulsed light waves and timing how long it takes for them to return. While camera data can be recorded and analyzed to improve security, it is currently not as secure as radar and lidar.

Add to that the fact that automated and semi-automated vehicles are not perfect, and the security of a camera-only system is debatable.

Why is Tesla ditching radar in favor of Tesla Vision?

The main reason Tesla is getting rid of its radar system is because it's expensive. Not only that, but it requires a lot of computer power. Also, Elon Musk is not a fan of lidar, which he called a "crutch." However, the Model S and Model X will continue to use radar.

Tesla has warned its EV owners with the new Tesla Vision that the semi-automatic driving system won't work as well as it used to. The company needs to make technical changes to Tesla Vision to make it work as well as a radar system. Of course, this means Tesla drivers are essentially testing new features.

While Tesla makes these technical adjustments, features like Autosteer will be limited to a top speed of 75 mph and the following distance will be increased. Smart Summon, a driverless feature that allows a Tesla to exit its parking space and approach its owner at low speed, will be disabled, as will lane departure prevention.

What if you have already ordered a Tesla and don't want Tesla Vision?

This is not a cause for concern. If you already bought a Tesla Model 3 or Model Y and didn't know your new car would have cameras instead of radar, it's not too late. Tesla informs buyers before they receive their vehicles, so there's still time to opt out.
