German Automobile Club ADAC and its Austrian partner ÖAMTC inspected 270 vehicles with a keyless entry system and found that almost all tested models could be easily opened and stolen.

“Recently, 273 Keyless-Go vehicles were tested and only four failed to open. Most manufacturers are clearly unwilling or unable to fix this security breach,” criticizes ÖAMTC specialist Stefan Kerbel. “Currently, Keyless-Go vehicles are much easier to steal than other vehicles. A total of four jaguar models, resp. In our tests, the Land Rover failed to unlock. So everything could be different - here other manufacturers need to quickly catch up,” the expert demands. The car club believes that owners should be able to turn off the radio.

No in-depth knowledge such as hacking or data mining is required to unlock the vehicle with Keyless-Go. To do this, a freely and legally available range extender is sufficient, with which testers open cars and start them in seconds without leaving visible traces.

The trick is that one thief carrying a device should be near the key, and the other with a second device should be close to the car door. Thus, according to ADAC, the range of radio signals increases by several hundred meters. This also works when "the key is in the hand, or the owner is sitting in the brewery with the key in his pants pocket." The two devices, whose components can be bought at any electronics store for about 100 euros, are very easy to make.

Without a trace of hacking

Once the engine is running, it will run until the tank is empty. The thief may be able to charge the vehicle while the engine is running. Since there are no signs of burglary on the car, owners are at risk of suspected insurance fraud when, for example, a stolen car is abandoned with the engine turned off.

The protection method is the corresponding key housings blocking radio waves. However, the driver must remove the key before each use and then put it back in the case.

Conclusion

There is no complete security, but car manufacturers can easily minimize the risk by providing a key with a simple shutdown function.
