While you may limp if the axle is only slightly bent, it's never a good idea to ride on a damaged axle. If the axle fails completely, you may lose control of the vehicle. Common axle damages include:

  • CV download leak You're fine for a while, but things will get better very soon. However, if the trunk of the CV is blown? If the joint does not make noise, then everything is fine for a very short time (repair it immediately). If the connection is noisy, a certified mechanic should come to you to replace the CV shoe.

  • Leaky seals: If the problem is due to a leaky seal (either in the transmission or rear differential), you may be able to drive safely for a while, depending on the severity of the leak. However, any leak, no matter how minor, will lower the fluid level (transmission fluid or transmission oil), which can cause very serious damage and cost far more than you would pay to replace an axle or axle seal.

  • Accident damage: If the axle is severely bent as a result of an accident, a collision with debris on the road, or driving through a very deep pothole, it is highly recommended to replace the axle assembly immediately. Never ride with a heavily bent axle (and try not to ride with an axle that has even a slight bend).

If you suspect you have a damaged axle, make sure you have it checked and repaired as soon as possible.
