Security. Shoes and driving

Security. Shoes and driving The topic may seem trivial to many, but just as comfortable clothing that does not restrict our movements is important for safe driving, another element is ... shoes. Many drivers, thinking about driving safety and being careful on the road, lose sight of choosing the right shoes. Meanwhile, driving while wearing wedges, high heels, or flip flops can create a situation where safe driving becomes significantly more difficult or impossible.

Not all drivers are aware that one of the important factors affecting driving safety is the shoes in which we sit behind the wheel. While it's obvious that you should ditch shoes that interfere with driving, many drivers don't. More attention should be paid to choosing the right shoes for driving. It can be tempting to ride in flip flops or sandals, especially on hot days, but is it safe?

What are the best shoes to avoid driving?

Security. Shoes and drivingOften the safety and comfort of travel depends on the choice of shoes for driving a car. Incorrect pedal pressure or shoes slipping off the pedals can be additional factors that cause stress, distraction, and even loss of control while driving.

Slippers or sandals are not a good choice while driving, as they can slip off your feet, get caught under the pedals, or get caught in or between the strap. Driving barefoot can also lead to dangerous consequences, including reduced braking power, creating a hazard on the road.

On the other hand, shoes that are too heavy can get stuck between the pedals, and with shoes that are too heavy, you run the risk of hitting two pedals at the same time. When driving, be sure to avoid shoes with wedges, trekking or thick soles, in which it is impossible to judge the force with which we press the pedals.

When driving a car, high heels are also not suitable, because in addition to the fact that they may be uncomfortable and we will feel tired feet faster in them, such a heel can catch on the carpet in the car or get stuck in the carpet, immobilizing the driver's leg. In the case of shoes with too high heels, pressing the pedals can also be significantly difficult, and all the pressure on the pedals must be concentrated on the toes, when the optimal weight should be transferred from the metatarsus to the toes.

Suitable shoes

For driving, it is best to choose soft shoes with thin and additionally non-slip soles, thanks to which we can fully control the force with which we press the pedals. For example, when riding, moccasins or sports shoes that do not tighten the ankles are well suited. On the other hand, in elegant driving shoes, an important criterion is a small, stable heel and the absence of elongated socks.

We don't have to give up wearing our favorite shoes. It is recommended to have an extra pair of driving shoes in the car that can be worn while driving. Spare shoes are also suitable when the shoes we wear, for example in rainy weather, absorb water and may not be suitable for driving a car, because wet soles will slide off the pedals, says Adam Bernard, director of Renault Safe.
