Security. Vehicle reverse. Are you doing it right?

Security. Vehicle reverse. Are you doing it right? Although this maneuver is relatively infrequent, improper reversing is a common cause of driver-caused accidents. What should I pay attention to when driving in reverse? Importance, among other things, concentration of attention, correct speed and skillful use of mirrors.

It may seem that reversing is a safe maneuver, since it is carried out at a very low speed. However, practice shows something else: in 2019, 459 accidents occurred due to incorrect reverse gear engagement. 12 people died in such incidents*.

Reversing requires coordination of many actions: we control the distance to nearby cars or other obstacles, we try not to disturb anyone and keep the right path. In such a situation, it is easy, for example, not to notice a pedestrian or a cyclist appearing behind the car, so maximum concentration during the maneuver is necessary, says Krzysztof Pela, an expert from the Renault Driving School.

How to reverse safely?

Security. Vehicle reverse. Are you doing it right? Before we even get into the car, let's assess the outside environment. Let's check the distance from us to other cars or obstacles. Separately, it is worth paying attention to the fact that there are no pedestrians, especially children, who are difficult to see, especially from a large car.

Maintaining the correct speed is also critical when reversing. Even when we are in a hurry, we must reverse slowly and calmly in order to assess all threats.

Let's follow the space next to the car and behind it both through the mirrors and through the rear and right rear windows. In this way, we ensure maximum visibility. However, if this is still not enough, because the view is blocking an obstacle or we have little space, it is worth asking the passenger for help, say the coaches of the Renault Safe Driving School.

When reversing, we can also turn off the radio, which distracts us and can jam the parking sensors (if the car has them) and signals from the environment, such as a warning cry. Many cars have a function to automatically turn off the music when reverse gear is engaged.

Where not to return?

It is worth remembering that there are places where it is generally impossible to move in reverse. It is prohibited in tunnels, bridges, viaducts, motorways or expressways. Reversing in such places can be especially dangerous, so you risk points deductions and a fine.

At the same time, if we have such an opportunity, it is worth avoiding reversing from a parking space or garage. In this case, the safer option is to park in reverse so that you can easily drive forward later.
