Summer vacation is over and the students will be back to school soon. It is very important that they arrive safe and sound. Unfortunately, in Poland, according to statistics, every day several children aged 7-14 are injured in traffic accidents. Then every third of them goes on foot*. Dangerous situations can be prevented through education, but the attitude of drivers is also very important.
Last year, 814 pedestrians aged 7 to 14 were injured in traffic accidents. Children are among the pedestrians who are particularly at risk of injury in road crashes**. How to counteract this?
– Adults are responsible for preparing children for road traffic. Parents can, for example, explain to their children during a joint walk how to cross a pedestrian crossing correctly, say the instructors of the Renault Safe Driving School.

However, it is worth remembering that for young children, safely crossing the road is a real challenge, as they acquire only the skills necessary for this task. People under the age of eleven are not fully able to select the information needed to cross the street safely**.
This means that drivers play a huge role in preventing accidents involving children on foot. Moreover, police statistics show that 2/3 of all accidents with a car hitting a pedestrian were the fault of the driver. Such accidents also occur mainly at pedestrian crossings*, where, in theory, the road crossing should be safe.
According to the rules of the road, a driver approaching a pedestrian crossing must exercise extreme caution. – The vigilance of the driver is of great importance, especially in areas frequented by children, since the behavior of the smallest is often difficult to predict and they can suddenly jump out onto the road. That's why it's so important to drive at the right speed in order to quickly stop the car in case of danger, says Zbigniew Veseli, director of the Renault Driving School.
The police remind me. Remember that your child:
– up to 7 years of age may use the road only under the supervision of a person at least 10 years of age, such as brothers and sisters. However, this rule does not apply to residential areas and routes intended only for pedestrians,
- on the way to and from school, he must walk along the sidewalk. In the case of a street without a sidewalk, always drive on the shoulder on the left side of the road, and in the absence of a sidewalk, on the left side of the road,
- he must cross the road only in places designated for this, i.e. at pedestrian crossings
- in the case of crossing with a traffic light, it is allowed to cross the road only when the green light is on, and in the absence of a traffic light, do the following: look left, then right, left again and when nothing goes, you can safely cross the road,
– never, even in places for pedestrians, you should not enter the road in front of a moving vehicle, and while waiting for the opportunity to cross, it should not stand too close to the road,
– at intersections with an island, you should stop to make sure that you change lanes,
- you can not go out on the road because of a standing or moving vehicle,
– he should not cross the road and should not play nearby.
