BMW 316i

This is, of course, the same engine used in the 318i, with a displacement of 1895 cubic centimeters, with two valves in a lightweight head and with a chain that is responsible for driving the camshaft. The bore (85mm) and stroke (83) are the same as the compression ratio (5:9), but the engine is weaker in the 7i. The maximum power is 1 hp, which is 316 hp. less than that of the "older" fellow, and the maximum torque is 105 Nm, which is 13 Nm less than that of the model marked 165i. It achieves both at lower rpm, maximum power at 15 rpm and maximum torque at 318 rpm.

The difference compared to the old 1-liter engine is even more obvious, especially in terms of torque - engine power remains the same. The previous engine was capable of developing a maximum of 6 Nm at a high 150 rpm. However, in our test (AM 4100/9) we praised the solid agility and in the final evaluation wrote that the most basic engined 1999 Series BMW is still a true BMW. Still better with the new engine.

The ride is always a pleasure, no matter what the winds of the road are in front of the smallest trinity, but of course, expectations should not be overstated. Unless you get in straight from the 330i, it shouldn't be a problem.

Factory data for acceleration and top speed remained very similar, and our measurements showed that the engine was much more flexible. This is also evidenced by subjective sensations. When the key is turned, the engine runs smoothly and quietly and remains so throughout the entire operating range. It can't compete with its six-cylinder siblings, but is polite enough to work quietly in the body of a triple. Fear of letting the driver down is completely unnecessary.

Combines well in the city in combination with a fast and precise gearbox and does not require much shifting. There is also no doubt about the acceleration from low revs, the engine pulls continuously all the time. It is strong enough in corners to move quickly and smoothly. If they get close and the car loses speed, the acceleration won't be lightning fast - after all, even the smallest trio on the scale weighs just under 1300kg.

The basic model is not meant for riders, this is important to know, but it will satisfy anyone who likes to travel in a relaxed way. On the highway, the speedometer needle picks up speed up to 200 km / h, but the most pleasant driving speeds are from 150 to 160 km / h. The engine does not load much, and the consumption is not too high. The test average was just under eleven liters per hundred kilometers, which is a good achievement considering the slightly heavier leg.

The environment in which the 1-liter engine is installed remains top-notch. The chassis is comfortable, reliable, with many safety features and excellent responsiveness. A thicker steering wheel with a smaller diameter would fit a precise steering gear and we have no other comments.

Much more offended by the driver's seat, which is already included in the list of standard comments. The backrest tilt is adjusted in stages, so it is difficult to find the optimal setting. The seat and backrest are too small, as is the back bench. There is plenty of room for adults, unless the basketball players are brought in ahead. The trunk is nicely designed, but its 435-liter capacity isn't very luxurious.

Trio is one of the top sedans, regardless of motorization. Even the base model has everything the big ones have for a slightly lower price.

evaluation

  • Entering the world of BMW begins (aside from the outdated Compactes) with the 316i. There are no compromises here, even the basic version offers the right amount of comfort, prestige and safety. The engine is powerful enough, flexible, and also economical, so you won't regret it if you think about it.
