BMW 635d Coupe

And we all said this at the beginning (that the car is excellent)! But since the tests do not read like the culprit Agatha Christa, who only finally reveals who the killer is. Is the "killer" here? a three-liter diesel with two turbochargers? already known from Petyka.

The star of Munich's motorcycle line-up is a favorite of even loyal gas station aficionados. Quite rightly, although the notion that a sleek gasoline tycoon still gets under the hood of such a car is still there. That the unit is grinding gas oil becomes clear when you walk up to the hood (you don't have to go outside to listen to the convertible). The cabin is so well insulated and the biturbo diesel is so smooth that you can hardly hear it in the cabin, which is of course a plus.

Diesel for me, no diesel? this question becomes irrelevant when you press the engine start button and press the accelerator pedal and a heavy coupe weighing more than 1 ton suddenly shifts. The in-line six-cylinder engine develops a maximum power of 7 "horsepower" in the near red field, and torque is important not only for power. Already at 286 rpm, it gives out 1.250 Nm, and at 500-1.750 maximum, that is, 2.750 Nm. In the absence of hard bumps (inclines, hard acceleration and braking), the Six can move decently with a tachometer needle between 580 and 1.200, and the engine is always ready to rev up.

The secret of the spark of the unit (also) is in the two turbochargers: the smaller one is responsible for the lower rev range, and the higher one (in a duet or solo) is a large “snail”. The acceleration measured on winter tires (6 seconds to 9 km / h) only confirms the impeccable quality of the engine. Not surprisingly, BMW was the first diesel engine to install this in the second generation of the six. The advantage of a diesel engine over its gasoline counterparts is a longer range. Since a 100-litre fuel tank isn't the biggest, and the 70d doesn't require more than ten liters of diesel for 635 km on a moderately heavy foot, you can easily go 100 kilometers with one tank of fuel.

In the test, Shetika consumed a maximum of 100 liters of fuel per 11 km, and she was also satisfied 1. Who buys a car worth 9 thousand euros to save money? You don't want the 7d for economy, but for performance, flexibility and responsiveness, which is especially commendable in the mid-range. Each plane quickly becomes too short, and this machine knows no slopes at all. Due to the acceleration, the navel will not stick to the spine, but the 100d heart can be described as athletic.

According to the speedometer, 50 km / h goes in fourth and 90 km / h without problems in sixth gear at around 1.500 rpm (most diesels are still unsuitable for these speeds), and if necessary (acceleration) the engine starts immediately due to good flexibility and adds more power. Even at a speed of 180 km / h (about 3.000 / min), the “house” is still quiet. With a neat chassis, it can be a real road coupe, because thanks to a comfortable suspension and a good seat (front), you get out of it refreshed even after a few hundred kilometers.

Since the renovation hasn't brought major innovations (most of the six remains the same as in 2003, when it was born), the comfort level remains lower on bad roads, where it turns out that the suspension is more difficult to adjust. However, the coupe is still used in everyday life and should not cause migraines.

Combinations with different transmissions are no longer in your head, as the 635d is only available with a new six-speed automatic transmission (known from the X5), which, in addition to the usual automatic mode, also offers a sporty one (shifting at higher speeds) and an owner's manual. The test model had a great M leather steering wheel with shift lugs (rotating with the steering wheel), but these mostly didn't work as the automatic shifted gears well enough that we didn't want to interfere.

Dynamic Driving Control, designed for faster driving, maximizes transmission enjoyment, the engine responds better to accelerator pedal commands, the gearbox shifts faster and is one gear lower (typically above 2.000 rpm) compared to normal, non-sporting regime., but in the sixth it flows only at a speed exceeding the maximum allowed in our country.

You will recognize the updated Six by its LED headlights, new taillights, new bumpers and a new bonnet. The interior is also a little freshened up, but the essence remains the same. Excellent driving position, good ergonomics, electrically adjustable and heated three-tier front seats, iDrive (also with a TV for € 1.304), slightly gymnastic access to the rear bench (where a tall one won't feel comfortable) and a solidly large trunk, what if you don't demanding and do not travel with sun loungers, you can also fill it with a (summer) holiday wardrobe.

The Test Six was equipped with quite a lot of equipment that raised the price from 81.600 euros to almost 107 euros and in which quite a lot of chocolates are hidden. For example, Night Vision (surcharge € 2.210), a BMW system that detects heat with an infrared camera (located at the bottom of the bumper) and displays people, animals and other objects (including houses) on a central screen, and its task is to warn the rest of the participants which we can't see because of the darkness.

Does the system have several limitations? dirt on the camera, the road is uneven, does not “see” when cornering, to use it you need to look at the central screen. ... In addition to the Head-Up display (€ 1.481), the BMW 635d was also equipped with a lane departure warning system (LDW, € 575). It not only works on the basis of floor markings (lines), it also detects the edge of the road and, if there is a danger that we will run over it, warns the driver by vibrating the steering wheel.

Of course, the system is completely switchable (if anyone, then BMW does not cut the joy of driving) and does not interfere with the turn signal turned on. The most valuable accessory was the Driving Dynamic package (€ 4.940), which includes Active Steering and Dynamic Drive. It is necessary? If you want to go faster with a six, that's advisable!

By preloading the anti-roll bars, DD takes care of the lowest possible, almost imperceptible body roll when cornering, while Active Steering adjusts the steering mechanism. So playing with stabilization on and off (or on, as it still allows a bit of fun) and anti-skid on the drive wheels becomes even more expressive, which is why Six is a pleasure. Not otherwise M3 ...

The list of accessories for the 635d is of course still long, and it also includes radar cruise control with Stop & Go functionality and parking assistant, which were otherwise missing from the test car. Although we did not miss the first, during maneuvers at close range, due to the opaque rear, we often missed the second.

evaluation

  • Money in this class shouldn't be an issue, so an emotional attachment to a gasoline engine may be the only reason against buying such a turbo diesel. An excellent touring coupe that will satisfy even the most demanding drivers.
