BMW will call 26 plug-in hybrids for service. They can catch fire when they are fully charged

Service campaign BMW, workshop will have to visit 26 plug-in hybrids. Dirt in the lithium-ion cell production line can cause the batteries to ignite when fully charged. There were three car fires last week: in Erfurt, Herne (Germany) and Salzburg (Austria).

Call a BMW Service Center. Fire hazard

Until 2018, BMW only partnered with South Korean Samsung SDI, but for two years the company also used Chinese CATL cells. The former were certainly used in the BMW i3, the latter may appear in various models - perhaps they only go to plug-in hybrids.

Service action including 27 plug-in hybrids produced from January 20 to September 18, 2020 suggests that the problem may be with one of the sub-suppliers. These cars are sold in at least Europe and the US, although BMW says the problem [sales] is country-specific.

Consideration should be given to the hazard (self-ignition) plug-in hybrid in X1, X2, X3, X5, Series 2 Active Tourer, Series 3, Series 5, Series 7, i8 and Mini Countryman.

The decision should be ready by the end of October. For now, BMW has advised plug-in hybrid owners not to charge their cars with a cable - but they don't have to worry about the energy recovered while driving (source).
