Test drive BMW X5 25d xDrive: unexpectedly successful combination

X5 and four-cylinder engine? Sounds ... not very promising for you? In fact, however, this combination is presented much more convincingly than the wildest expectations.

Whether intentionally or not, most people expect one BMW, especially when it comes to one of the most elite model families of the brand, to be “the most” as much as possible. Perhaps for this reason, the four-cylinder version of the full-size X5 SUV hardly sounds like the most promising the Bavarians are capable of. However, as is often the case in life, prejudice this time turns out to be a bad advisor.

Two turbochargers and 450 Nm maximum torque

Because the objective truth looks a little different. On the one hand, the two-liter twin-turbo unit develops a maximum output of 218 horsepower and reaches a maximum torque of 450 Newton meters at 1500 rpm. Quite objectively, these are more than good parameters for a car weighing about two tons - some of the competitors of this model are heavier, but are content with more modest characteristics, without making them "bulky" in the classical sense. concept. On the other hand, the well-known talent of the Munich designers is to use their full potential to make the best of every challenge. What is surprising, though, is that the dynamics of the 25d xDrive variant feel comparable to that of the previous generation 30d xDrive modification. The real surprise is that you always feel like you're in a car with a much more powerful engine - the proven ZF eight-speed automatic transmission manages to keep revs remarkably low, while the four-cylinder unit remains confident. him and his subtle manner in every situation, and there is never a lack of traction or a real need for more power. And to top it all off, average fuel consumption usually stays below and below seven liters per hundred kilometers - note that we are talking about a car 4,90 meters long, 1,94 meters wide and 1,76 meters high, whose own weight two tons...

The perfect companion for long hikes

Otherwise, the X5 in this version demonstrates all the characteristic qualities of the new edition of the model - driving comfort is excellent, and the atmosphere in the cabin is close to that of the Series 7. In addition, the car can be carried as much as you like. cornering at speeds far beyond what a large SUV would expect. What the X5 25d xDrive does best, however, is a pleasant and relaxed ride with a moderate driving style. To that end, the car is surprisingly close to achievable perfection - and the four-cylinder engine is no obstacle in that direction.

Conclusion

While initial expectations for the four-cylinder version of the X5 are not entirely clear 25.dxDrive turns out to be an absolutely worthy member of his model family. Advanced, extraordinarily economical and powerful enough, the 5-litre biturbo engine is a really good alternative to the XXNUMX's handling.
