BMW Z4 and Toyota Supra: different twins

BMW Z4 and Toyota Supra: different twins

Developed on the same platform, produced at the same plant (St. Magna Steyrin Austria) and born from a joint project between BMW and Toyota, the BMW Z4 and Toyota Supra were perhaps the two most anticipated sports cars of the 2018/2019 season. Now they have arrived, we have seen and tested them, and we know all the similarities and differences. Despite the shared DNA, two distinct twins remain, one in German and the other in Japanese. Two culturally different ways of interpreting the same recipe for driving pleasure. First big difference: The Z4 is a convertible, the Supra, at least for now, is a closed coupe.

dimensions

Let's start with the dimensions. Bavarian first. There BMW Z4 it is 432 cm long, 186 cm wide, 130 cm high and with a distance between the axles of 247 cm. It does not fit into the trunk, its cargo volume is only 281 liters. Compared to the German one, the Japanese coupe is 6 cm (438 cm) longer, 1 cm (185 cm) narrower and 1 cm (129 cm) lower. The step, you guessed it, is the same. Compared to the trunk, we have more or less 290 liters there. Ample space for a couple's suitcases (for the weekend). Both, if not understood, are double.

Potenza

This time, let's start with the Japanese. Under the front hood Toyota Supra are 3-liter six-cylinder in-line turbocharged enginelocated just behind the front wheels to provide a 50:50 weight distribution. 340 horsepower, 500 Nm of torque and an 8-speed automatic transmission (the only transmission available) from ZF. And this beating heart that he shares with the German.

Under the long front hood of the new BMW Z4, two engines are available, both petrol: in addition to the six-cylinder, there is also a turbocharged 2.0-cylinder 4 engine available in two power levels – 197 or 258 hp.

performance

full speed BMW Z4 with a 2.0 engine with 197 or 258 hp. and a 340 hp six-cylinder engine. it is, in order, 240, 250 and 250 km / h, it takes 0 - 100 - 6,6 seconds to accelerate from 5,4 to 4,6 km / h, and the average consumption is 6,1 - 6,1 - 7,4 .100 l / XNUMX km. There Toyota Supra it's more responsive than the Z4, with the same 3.0-liter inline-six that accelerates from 0-100 in 4,3 seconds (0,3 seconds less) and has a top speed of 250 km / h (limited).

prices

And finally, the prices. There Toyota Supra, offered with one motor and one complete optional installation, costs 67.900 euros. There BMW Z4 on the other hand, it has a much wider choice of options, 3 engines and different configurations, and prices range from 42.700 € 65.700 to XNUMX XNUMX €.
