The sDrive30i designation means that after motorization it is exactly in the middle of the model range. It's not a high-performance bi-turbo engine, but the three-liter V-XNUMX more than matches the car's weight and the sporty demands of the driver. And the drivetrain looks brighter on the skin of athletes than cruise lovers: a six-speed manual transmission means you can have a great time on twisty roads, but also that you'll have to work in city crowds. not in automation.

In general, the question of whether this Z4 will be more automatic transmission has always been shared by the members of the editorial board. The final rating was ultimately in favor of those who favored the gear lever and three-pedals, but mainly because the alternative is a classic automatic transmission rather than the dual-clutch that is only available in the sDrive35i.

It's a shame, because the combination of an extremely fast dual-clutch transmission and a three-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder would be great (and most desirable).

But make no mistake: the six-speed manual gearbox is not without anything either. Its lever movements are short and well-defined, the driver's hand can be shifted very quickly, and the gearbox does not resist at all. And since revs also drop quickly when shifting gears, the whole thing can be very, very sporty.

The pedals are also perfectly positioned, so adding intermediate throttle when downshifting becomes common. With a little practice, you become, so to speak, a human dual-clutch transmission. ...

Motor? Great in this car. It turns quickly and quickly (the responsiveness of the accelerator pedal can be adjusted, but a little later), its sound is just right loud, a sports growl comes from the exhaust, periodically accompanied by gargling and crackling when overflowing or pumping out gas. The Z4 isn't light, and 190 kilowatts or 258 horsepower isn't a number that will make you dizzy, but the car is still amazingly fast.

Let's illustrate this: Acceleration is almost as good as a two-generation M1200 racing M3 with 321 horsepower and 35 kilograms and a short, accelerated drivetrain. Satisfied? If not, just pamper yourself with the sDriveXNUMXi.

Chassis? Big. The test Z4 was completely standard, only 18-inch wheels with Bridgeston's off-road capabilities were available, but unless you plan on using it often on the track, you don't need it anymore. It's soft enough to be used every day, yet firm enough to provide a ton of driving pleasure.

Butt sweeping is just foot pressure, but of course you have to play with the electronics first. The Dynamic Drive Control (DDC) system has shift lever control switches. Switching from normal to sport mode increases the responsiveness of the accelerator pedal and electric power steering (which gives you as much feel and feedback as the best hydraulic systems), and in Sport+ mode, things get even more aggressive, while also disengaging the e-vehicle. stability control.

For sporty driving on the road, the Sport Mode with Reduced DSC (DTC) proved to be the best option. The car is responsive, you can afford to slip a little, but if it goes too fast, the e-passenger will make sure everything ends well.

The two-piece aluminum roof moves electro-hydraulically and takes about 20 seconds to open or close. The roof, of course, folds under the boot lid, and boot volume is reduced from the base 310 liters (a whopping 50 liters more than its predecessor) to 180 liters (still usable).

This means that when the roof is folded down, you can still put two airplane suitcases and a laptop in it, but the roof will still need to be opened to access the luggage.

BMW engineers saved a lot of space because the roof is folded so that both curved parts are stacked on top of each other (with the convex parts facing in the same direction), rather than facing each other as in (most) competition.

Unfortunately, to move the roof, you have to completely stop (the competition here allows you to move the roof while driving), and we attributed this to an even greater disadvantage due to the rattles and crickets coming from its nodes and mechanism. For a 56 car, engineers expect engineers to make sure that doesn't happen.

And ride with the roof down? There will be an extra charge for the windshield (rather than the not-quite-gentle €300). When the side windows are lowered, strong wind is expected, with the side windows up, it only begins to swirl around the cab at freeway speeds - interestingly, at really high speeds, the wind is again less.

Safety is especially important for vehicles with a retractable roof, especially when rollover. In the case of the new Z4, the reinforced windshield frame and the roll bar behind the seats make the passengers itch. Side airbags protect not only the chest, but also the head.

Minus safety (actually the only one): the ISOFIX anchorage points on the right seat are paid additionally (a little less than 100 euros), the installation of a child seat is also hampered by a fixed pillow. Does BMW think convertible owners don't have small children?

There's more room inside than its predecessor, which isn't surprising considering the Z4 has grown. Both open and closed roofs can be easily raised even above 190 centimeters, and the question is how much your glutes and back will converge with sports seats such as the Z4 test in the Design Pure White package. The usual ones are usually more convenient.

The seats are upholstered in convertible leather, which heats less in the sun (but if you think of them in white, like in the Z4 test, there are no such problems at all) and the materials used inside are excellent (production is slightly less). Finding the right place behind the wheel (if the seats suit you) is easy, all the switches are at hand, the steering wheel is just the right size, but there is not enough space to store drinks. ...

This Z4 is actually a kind of amphibian. On the one hand, I feel like I would like to be a sports roadster (manual transmission, great chassis and engine), on the other hand, I would like to be able to use me on longer trips on a daily basis (hardtop, low noise level). ... Now you just have to decide: does this mean that he is not as good in either of these two roles as if he was intended for only one, and it worries you too much, or is he good enough at both to count on him plus. Avto Magazin opted for the second option.

Face to face. ...

Vinko Kernc: When you get into such a motorized Z4, it becomes clear again: you can only get such mechanics as they do in Bimvi - in Bimvi. Nowhere else (among stock cars) will you find mechanics who are so sociable with the driver; even the manual transmission is great this time around. However, inside this BMW is too narrow (especially for fast steering turns) and probably not the best in terms of design. Especially from behind. If it matters at all. .

Overall rating (340/420)

  • Such a Z4 is an athlete, on the one hand, and an enjoyer, on the other. The mechanics are top notch, but unfortunately the workmanship is up a bit, especially with the roof. But for the money, you'd be hard-pressed to find more driving pleasure in a roadster.

  • Exterior (14/15)

This is exactly what a roadster should be: sporty, with a long nose and short rear end, and at the same time compatible with a raised or lowered roof.

  • Interior (91/140)

The spaces are surprisingly good, the wind is not strong. The trunk is still quite useful.

  • Engine, transmission (62

    / 40)

The sound comfort and refinement of a gasoline engine is in itself, the manual transmission is at its best.

  • Driving performance (65

    / 95)

It's not that hard, but it still has an excellent position on the road. The brakes are great.

  • Performance (30/35)

Fast, but at the same time allows a lot of laziness when changing gears, as there is enough torque.

  • Security (37/45)

Passenger safety will be well taken care of and DSC can be eliminated.

  • Economy

The price is not low, nor is the loss of value. Such a convertible is not for those who need to think about expense or price.
