News behind the Porsche Taycan: Plug & Charge, custom features, head-up display

The model year change in October will bring many new features to the Porsche Taycan. The new Plug & Charge feature allows convenient charging and payment without using cards or apps: plug in the charging cable and the Taycan will establish an encrypted connection with a compatible Plug & Charge charging station. As a result, the charging process starts automatically. Payments are also processed automatically.

Additional innovations include vehicle functionswhich can be ordered flexibly online (Functions on Demand, FoD), color head-up display and built-in charger with a charging capacity of up to 22 kW. In the future, the adaptive air suspension will receive the Smartlift function.

The acceleration characteristics of the Taycan Turbo S have also been improved. With Launch Control, it now accelerates from zero to 200 km / h in 9,6 seconds, which improves the previous time by 0,2 seconds. It covers a quarter mile in 10,7 seconds (previously 10,8 seconds). As before, the Taycan has proven itself many times over without sacrificing efficiency, which is typical of a sports car.

The completely redesigned electric sports car will be available to order from mid-September and will be available at Porsche Centers from mid-October.

Intuitive display system and smart chassis

A color head-up display is now available upon request. This projects relevant information directly into the driver's field of vision. The display is divided into a main display section, a status section, and a section for displaying temporary content such as calls or voice commands. You can also select the navigation display, power meter, and user view as presets.

Thanks to the new Smartlift function, fitted as standard in conjunction with the adaptive air suspension, the Taycan can be programmed to lift automatically in certain repetitive areas, such as uneven speeds or garage lanes. Smartlift can also actively influence the vehicle's ride height when traveling on the motorway, adjusting the vehicle level to achieve the best compromise between driving efficiency and comfort.

The 22 kW on-board AC charger is now also available as a new accessory. This device charges the battery about twice as fast as a standard 11 kW AC charger. This option will be available later this year.

Flexible Post-Purchase Upgrades with Customized Features (FoD)

With FoD, Taycan drivers can purchase various features for convenience and assistance when needed. What makes this approach special is that it works even after purchase and for the original sports car configuration. With live updates online, you don't need to visit a service center. Porsche Intelligent Range Manager (PIRM) is now available as FoD. Power Steering Plus, Active Lane Keep Assist and Porsche InnoDrive will now be added as additional FoD features.

Customers can choose whether they want to purchase the appropriate feature for their Taycan or subscribe monthly. Customers get three months of testing if they opt for a monthly subscription. After registering, selecting the desired functions in the Porsche Connect Store and provided that a connection can be established, the Porsche backend sends a data packet to the Taycan via the mobile network. Porsche Communication Management (PCM) notifies drivers of the presence of this data package. After that, activation will take a few minutes. After successful activation of the center display, a notification will appear. Four features are available for purchase with the transition to model year, and three are available with a monthly subscription.

Active Lane Keep Assist maintains the vehicle in the center of the lane with constant steering intervention – even in heavy traffic. InnoDrive adapts the speed individually to upcoming conditions such as speed limits, curves, roundabouts, situations in which you have to give way or stop, all in the typical sports car way. Both features are available for a fee of €19,50 per month, or €808,10 each as a purchase option.

With active Porsche Intelligent Range Manager (PIRM) route guidance works in the background, optimizing all system parameters for maximum comfort and shortest travel times. This feature costs € 10,72 per month or comes for a one-time fee of € 398,69.

Power Steering Plus works according to vehicle speed. It reacts directly and accurately at high speeds and provides stronger rudder support at lower speeds. This special feature is available for a one-time fee of € 320,71. It is not available as a monthly app. All prices are suggested retail prices for Germany, including VAT 16%.

Even more convenient charging

An additional new feature is battery-saving charging. It can limit the charging capacity at suitable charging points (such as high-powered Ionity charging stations) to around 200kW if customers plan to take a longer break from driving. This extends battery life and reduces overall power loss. Drivers can choose to charge while maintaining battery function on the center display. Of course, if customers decide not to use this option, charging power up to 270kW will remain available at 800V high power charging stations.

Additional new smart charging features are available with Mobile Charger Connect and Home Energy Manager. These include the power protection function, which can now prevent overloading the internal connection, regardless of phase, as well as optimized charging with the energy produced in the country. Use this feature to charge the Taycan using internal solar energy as part of a targeted process. After reaching a freely configurable minimum battery level, the system only consumes solar energy, which is not used in the building.

Plug & Charge makes downloading easy: Taycan drivers simply plug in the charging cable and it's charging. Authentication data is stored in the vehicle. As a result, the charging station automatically identifies the connected vehicle. The ISO 15118 standard ensures that the link between infrastructure and vehicle is unchanged. Payments are also processed automatically. Plug & Charge is already operating at Ionity charging stations in Germany, Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Italy and the Czech Republic. Twelve more European countries will appear in early 2021. In the US and Canada, Plug & Charge technology will also be available from Electrify America and Electrify Canada at many gas stations from early 2021.

Large selection of colors

For the 2021 model year, a choice of seven new body colors is offered: Mahagany Metallic, Frozenberry Metallic, Cherry Metallic, Coffee Beige Metallic, Chalk, Neptune Blue and Ice Gray Metallic.

The Carbon Sport Design package is available for all Taycan versions. It includes elements such as carbon fiber in the lower front end and side sill skirts, as well as carbon fiber ribs on the rear diffuser.

Digital radio is now standard. DAB, DAB + and DMB digital audio broadcasts provide significantly better sound quality. Porsche has also improved the standard equipment in terms of connectivity.
