Bosch is ready for series production of fuel cells (hydrogen)

Bosch unveiled the first proprietary fuel cells and announced that their mass production should begin in 2022. It turned out that they will be used, including by the Nikola company, known for its announcements of tractors.

Bosch fuel cells and market forecasts

During a press demonstration in Stuttgart, Germany, Bosch announced that it is supplying Nicola with electric powertrains (trade name: eAxle). It also sells a fuel cell kit startup that hasn't been publicly discussed so far.

Bosch CEO Jurgen Gerhardt announced that he expects fuel (hydrogen) cells to account for 2030 percent of the heavy-duty truck market by 13. They are currently three times more expensive than diesel engines, but could get cheaper through mass production.

It is worth adding that the fuel cells marketed under the Bosch brand were produced by the Swedish company Powercell, with which Bosch entered into a strategic partnership in April 2019. The solution should also be suitable for passenger cars, apparently, there are even companies that are already interested in this. Their names were not disclosed.

An interesting fact is that Herbert Diess - now the head of the Volkswagen concern - admitted that many years ago he tried to establish cooperation and produce electric vehicles with a European manufacturer of lithium-ion cells. Failed. Bosch also wanted to enter the lithium-ion battery segment, but eventually decided against it. The company clearly believes that, despite the setbacks in the battery segment, it will turn the tide by investing in fuel cells (hydrogen).
