Bosch awarded for latest ABS
The German automobile club ADAC awarded Bosch with the Yellow Angel 2010 (Gelber Engel) award for the development of a new ABS system for motorcycles.
First place in the Innovation and Environment category, the jury recognized the enormous safety potential offered by the innovative Bosch product.
Bosch has been producing active safety systems for motorcycles since 1994. The new "ABS 9 base" system is smaller and weighs only 0,7 kg, which means it is half the size and lighter than previous generation systems.
Studies conducted in Germany show that since 1970 the number of deaths in car accidents has decreased by more than 80%, while the number of deaths among motorcyclists has remained unchanged for many years. In 2008 it was 822 people. The risk of death when driving a motorcycle is 20 times higher for the same distance of kilometers than when driving a car.
A 2008 study published by the Federal Highway Administration (BASt) found that if all motorcycles were equipped with ABS, motorcyclist fatalities could be reduced by 12%. According to a study by the Swedish road authority Vagverket in 2009, up to 38 percent of crashes could have been avoided with this system. of all collisions involving casualties and 48 percent. all severe fatal accidents.
Until now, only one in ten new motorcycles produced in Europe, and even one in a hundred in the world, had an ABS system. For comparison: in the case of passenger cars, the share of cars equipped with ABS is now about 80%.
