62 Brabham BT2019: $1.8 million hypercar gets road upgrade

The Brabham Automotive BT62 track car will be offered with a conversion package for UK road use, with the brand introducing a similar option in Australia in the near future.

The $1.8 million BT62 could be one of the fastest cars on our roads: the Australian-designed and Adelaide-built monster is powered by a mid-mounted 5.4-liter V8 engine producing 522kW and 667Nm.

And while those numbers might not be very impressive on their own, they should be more than enough when paired with the BT62's carbon fiber body, which limits its weight to just 927kg. Brabham has yet to confirm official sprint and top speed figures, but we suspect it will indeed be very fast.

The Road Compliance Conversion brand is currently only offered in the UK, but the brand says it plans a similar upgrade for its Australian customers, promising that "a similar process is underway in Australia and Brabham Automotive will look to fulfill similar conversion requests in other jurisdictions."

The package adds another £150,000 ($267K) to the impressive asking price of BT62, as the vehicle must be fully tested by the relevant government body and the track car's ground clearance will be increased by lifting the front and rear axles. A larger range of steering locks will also be added, along with air conditioning, door locks and additional interior upholstery.

But Brabham promises that, despite the obvious increase in weight, engine power will not change.

“We designed the BT62 to be a thoroughbred racing car with no limits, and our extensive testing program has shown it meets all of these requirements,” says Brabham Automotive Managing Director David Brabham, son of Australian F1 ace Jack Brabham.

“This car is not designed for the road. With that said, it's clear that some customers are interested in having their BT62 road compatible, especially for trips to and from the track. My father Jack has always been customer focused and we will continue to do so.”
