Fast charging DC Renault Zoe ZE 50 up to 46 kW [Fastned]

Fastned has published a charging scheme for the Renault Zoe ZE 50 from a 50 kW DC charger. The car reaches 46 kW at its peak, and then the car systematically reduces power to less than 25 kW when the battery is 75 percent charged.

How Renault Zoe ZE 50 is charged from DC

The Renault Zoe ZE 50 is the first Renault Zoe to ever be equipped with a CCS fast charging socket and allows direct current (DC) instead of alternating current (AC). Previous generations of vehicles only had Type 2 connectors and had a maximum output of 22 kW (Renault R-series engines) or 43 kW (Continental Q-series engines).

In the latest generation, the maximum charging power is 46 kW (up to 29%), although it starts to drop rapidly, reaching about 41 kW at 40%, 32 kW at 60% and less than 25% at 75%:

Fastned's spreadsheet is very practical because it gives us the knowledge that:

  • we can drain the battery to about 3 percentand yet charging will start at almost full power,
  • energy will replenish the fastest in the range of 3 to about 40 percent: about 19 kWh will be refueled in about 27 minutes, which should correspond to about +120 km of slow driving (and a charging speed of +180 km / h),
  • depending on the distance traveled the optimal moment to disconnect from the charger - the battery is 40-45 or 65 percent chargedwith a charging power of more than 40 or more than 30 kW.

In the latter case, of course, we assume that we will reach our destination or the next charging station on a 40/45/65 percent charged battery.

The maximum real range of the Renault Zoe ZE 50 is up to 330-340 kilometers.... In winter or when driving on the highway, it will decrease by about 1/3, so if we have to travel 500 kilometers, it would be most reasonable to plan charging about halfway.

The Renault Zoe battery is air-cooled, also in the latest generation ZE 50. Its useful capacity is approximately 50-52 kWh. The car's main competitors are the Peugeot e-208 and Opel Corsa-e, which can charge up to 100 kW when the charging station allows it, but have a slightly smaller battery:
